hi all I have a c180 K that started to misfire I have taken it to a Merc Specialist. I am told it needs a new chain and sprockets but the sprockets cost £500 each. Can these be bought anywhere else ?

Thanks for the help

No I wont be doing the job myself, I have passed all the details to the garage who will look into them.
Still looks like its going to be an expensive repair.

Good luck with that, hope they do a proper job and you have trouble free motoring after.
How many miles were on your car and did it have a service history?

Its a 2007 model we have had it for about 5 years it had a full mbsh when we got it and has been serviced at each interval it has got 78000 on the clock now. Very annoyed. I have a c220 cdi has nearly 200,000 on the clock apart from some springs and bushes never had a problem with it.

Indeed more than annoying with a low mileage and a good history that it should need an expensive repair. I have a mk2 GTD Golf with nearly 300,000kms and runs great makes you wonder about MB petrol engines.

I was shocked when the garage told me the m271 engine is actually a mitsubishi engine and that the chain problem started as soon as they started using it but they carried on using it

My car was made in South Africa, but one of the reasons I bought it was to avoid having to change a cam belt but this makes that look like a cheap and simple job.
Well good luck, hope you find good quality parts at a good price and end up with a reliable motor.

So an update

The local merc garage has been fixing the car, they are using parts not from merc,I will add source when I know for sure where they got them.

They quoted approx £1200

Today after they have fitted everything and reassembled the chain is making a noise. They think its the new cams and will be contacting the supplier on Monday.

For £1200 they should know what's making the noise!

You would think so! I am starting to get the feeling this is going to end badly, the garage blaming the parts the suppliers blaming the garage me seriously out of pocket and a broken car

£1200 is as serous as it should get. It's their repair and their problem, you should insist on having a 100% repair and a guarantee.

i have a C220 and was thinking of getting a more modern version of the car, W204, but petrol. after reading all these stories about how poor these petrol engines are, i'll keep my car a bit longer.

Think the m271 engine will be avoided, I surely will be

This issue only affects the 4-cilinder M271 petrol engine.

But a 2013 W204, or any W205, with the new M274 petrol engine, should be fine, as well as the (rare) 6-cylinder petrols.

(Incidentally I had a W203 with the M271 engine for 9 years - sold it to a forum member and it is still going strong - so while it's definitely a potential issue, it does not actually affect all M271 engines)

And for what it's worth... it is not actually a 'Mitsubishi engine' - the basic design is indeed based on a similar Mitsubishi engine, but the M271 was developed and manufactured by Mercedes Benz.
