Do any of you have any tips/tricks to increase the performance of a 1999 C180?

I wanted a C250TD and was going to get it chipped, but decided to save some money and get a C180 for the time being and save up for a new shape C220 or C270CDi.

Whilst I am very happy with my first Mercedes car, I sometimes wish it had a bit more oomph! Especially after driving my dads E320CDi wow what a motor!, and a friends E240.

I am not a speed freak, I had a Merc Vito 112CDi van for three years and was pleased with the performance. I just like my cars and wondered if there were any easy and cheap ways to tweak these engines. I don't think there are any chips available for the C180, unless anybody can tell me different.

Have already got a K&N filter which made a huge difference. Can anybody suggest anything else?

yes sure. Get a FSE boost valve, they make them specially for the C180. get them from here:

or do what I'm going to do - strap on a Turbocharger!!!

oh by the way you can get your ECU chipped - but only if you have a BOSCH ECU.

I have heard about the FSE power boost valves, do they make a difference?

A friend of mine runs a garage and he told me they would be no use on my car. Was it easy to fit?

Crikey that turbo kit looks like a major job, are going to fit it yourself? I am not looking at going that far as I don't plan to keep the car for more than a couple of years and would be worried about the resale value after a turbo has been fitted.

I know the engine is strong enough to take it, it's just that they never made a C180 Turbo and it might put some people off.

Superchips do not do a chip for the C180, do you know somebody who does?

Glad you pointed me towards this forum, it is brilliant, I have enjoyed reading through the topics.

Koolvins heavily into "strap-ons"!!!!

LOL @ Greg

I think some of my "turbo fitting" skils could end up being used here

I just saw an SL55 amg going from 0-60 so fast it was blurry ....

I have just received an e-mail update from Superchips, although a replacement chip is not available from Superchips the following is:

---------------------
The Mercedes C180 1.8 would gain up to 10 bhp and 10-15% gain in low to mid range torque by using our exclusive Customer Key Serial Reprogramming System (detailed Power and torque curves are included, if available). This will allow your car's ECU to be programmed with the revised ignition timing to create a more sporting advance curve, the fuel map is modified to further optimise power output on full power and to improve throttle response without destroying economy on part throttle. This gives you low speed flexibility and swifter overtaking. Driven carefully fuel consumption may even improve.

A Superchips warranty is offered at no additional cost to vehicles still covered by the original manufacturers warranty please see attached information.

Note this is a non visible modification which would normally does not register on the vehicle diagnostics at time of servicing.

The UK cost of the modification is £293.75* including installation and VAT, our approved fitting centres within your area are our appproved fitting centres within your area are RGS Motorsport (Wellingborough) Tel: 01933 441451 or JWS Motorsport (Northampton) Tel: 01604 624461.
--------------------------------------

So what do you guys reckon?

Is an extra 10bhp and 10-15% extra torque going to be noticable?

That should be comparable with a C200, is it worth it or should I save the money towards a bigger engined car in two or three years?

I'd save up for a bigger engined car! talk about a hypocryt eh?

I wish I hadnt wastes so much money on my car, I could have bloody got a C43 with the amount of money I have spent.

Worth a go for £300, unless you are going to upgrade whole car in the next few months.

I forgot to mention I have negotiated a trade discount if I were to go ahead with, so it won't cost me £300.

I just don't know if approx 10% improvement would be noticable or worthwhile, I would like to think it would be.

Just established that I have a Bosch ECU, so it can be done.

I am going to go to RGS Motorsport tomorrow and discuss what they do and what I can expect from re-programming my ECU.

I will let you know what they say and what I decide to do.

Jimmy, I have had a C250TD Sport (S) and a C240 Sport (T) and the TD was fantastic; not that the V6 was not. It was just that the torque of that TD made everyday driving great.

IMHO, I would wait and save up for that next car especially if a C43 came along. What a motor and with 300+ horses! .

Hi

I have just seen the turbo that you plan on installing on your c180 and was wondering how much it was and where you can get them from. I own a c200 and would like to know if I could get one for it. I know I can get it chipped and put a induction kit on it but nothing gives you the power of a turbo. Any information would be great.

PS cant wait to hear how the car goes when you have fitted the turbo.

Check the date of the last post on this thread .... :)

Koolvin's turbo goes very nicely indeed :D

Koolvin got his kit from the states; but there is a little place in Uxbridge that does turbo's for the W202. They charge £4500 grand for the whole thing, fitted. (Kinda around the value of the car...)

If you want, I'll pass by one of these days and ask them their contact details, I lost their link in my hard drive crash...

DOH! Beaten too it :p

Have a look here

Look under performance tuning for ecu upgrades 30bhp+ £250

Also make sure you search this site for some reviews of MP - you might not be keen on letting them undertake this work!
