if i had the money... this is a big if as my girlfriend is my bank. i beg, she gives, or doesnt as the current climate seems, how hard would it be to "tune" the engine? There's no Kompressor in the front, which i believe translated is a supercharger (sorry if I'm wrong) and whats the possibilty of putting a turbo in instead? Induction kits, too, are something that i may have to look into but the last kit i had made me look stupid and i dont want that :o

Turbo is very possible, please take a look in the classifieds as there is at least one kit for sale ATM (not by me I should add, my car is factory-supercharged! ;) ).

As Olly says, no point modding the engine on a C180 these days when good 230K/280 models can be bought so cheaply. Even £1-2k can buy a reasonable example it seems.

The cost of the turbo + fitting + additional insurance would be more expensive, less reliable and not as quick.

Add an AMG badge, that will add at least 10 Bhp.

^^ lol KillerHERTZ i must try that out :)

no point in me buying another car, my C180 is a fortunate hand-me-down from my grandad as he moved back out to Sudan. lovely car with low mileage I see no reason to sell.

Another point is... it's already bloody 1400 odd quid to insure what on earth would i do with a bigger engine?!

Did you check post nr 4?That will work

and in my view also devalue the car.

I'd wait until you can afford to buy & run a standard faster car.

More to the point, what on earth would it cost to insure with modifications such as a turbocharger conversion! :o

The value of the car isnt really an issue... I highly doubt I'd even get more than 2k for it anyways in the state its in. And the current market is pretty ****ty.

true that... but i would have thought still less than a 230 or 280K?

Possibly not

A standard 230K is a standard car, a group or two higher

A non standard car will need specialist insurer who can charge more and will based on your reduced options AND the 'moral hazard' of a driver who is willing to spend hundreds to make a car go faster (and then will of course drive it faster)

A standard, still relatively sedate, 230K will be a better all round option. Give it a year if you cannot afford to swap or want to swap out the present you were given. (would be my suggestion)

Or of course, spend the money, pay the consequences and have (careful) fun

thanks for all the info. i'll see how it heads out. if there's any remotely sensible thought going through my head right now it is "wait until you're 25"... meh seems further away every time i think about it.

on the thought, modding your car, do you have to give notice for everything you modify, or just the engine and body work? i mean, i REALLY need to change the interior... like... now.

When i went from my C200 to the C230k my premium went up by £100.

and the C230K in manual is an awesome car in alot of respects, costs nothing to run, can be fun if whenever you want it to be and does very similar mpg to the c200 that i used to have.

Its one of the best cars ive ever had

Anything and everything unfortunately.

I appreciate what Koolvin has said about insurance, but as a rule of thumb, standard cars are much cheaper to insure.

Insurers often see modified vehicles as statistically greater risks than standard cars, often even if the standard model is a higher grouping.

You rarely get any money back on modifications either - IMHO save your pennies and trade up to a newer/faster/better specced model when circumstances allow :)
