C180 (W203) 2002 Gearbox Leak

Hi all,

Just after some info before my car goes into the garage next week.

Have problems with gear shifts etc over the last month especially going around corners.

Upon looking at the underside of the car, I can see an oil underneath the plastic undertray

Have checked engine oil and is still at max, so must be the gearbox oil.

Has anyone had this problem, after last service they said slight dampness around geabox sum pan.

Does this look like any easy fix or a costly one, possible seal or big gearbox rebuild etc.

Just nice to have details before Garage get there hands on it.

Just a quick note, I see the gearbox has a tamper proof cap.
Can I remove this and add some fluid just to make sure there is some in there for the Journey to the garage.

Presuming I can add a little, what fluid would I purchase from Halfords and how can I remove the cap

The leak (if it is from the gearbox) is most likely to be from the wiring plug that connects to it. The rubber surround goes hard and leaks.

MB autoboxes need a very specific fluid. 'Any old stuff' from Halfords will destroy it.

The cap just breaks off, theres a plastic tab you break.

Mine has been broken for years, doesn't stop me from using it still :)

I wouldn't recommend putting ATF in without a dipstick - too much can harm the seals in the gearbox.

Have topped up with the proper castrol ATF.

The Garage is on about changing the gearbox ECU if its got oil on it, as may go defective.

My Gearbox now topped up is operating perfectly..is he trying to see me off.

Leak now fixed.

Leak at the electrical connector and the Geabox oil radiator attached to the main radiator had a crack, so the garage had to fit a whole new radiator because both engine radiators come as one.

Hopefully all sorted, although coolant alert has appeared so need to check coolant level

Does anyone know where the gearbox radiator is situated.

As my garage apparently replaced my gearbox radiator.....I would like to check

C180 W203 year 2002.....

Well that certainly can happen, but I'd rather wait until it actually goes wrong. If the leak is fixed it may never do!
