Hi all. Have read through the relevant posts on here and other similar forums, but none solve this problem.
My Dad's C180K has been perfect since he bought it new in 2002. Last week he started it one morning and the engine revved a little higher than normal, but settled down. He went on his journey all fine. However on the way home the car was jerky and developed a really rough idle when stationary.
When he got home the car would barely idle and the exhaust was giving out quite a bit of smoke (possibly water vapour) and a smell of rotten eggs.
Spoke to a recommended Mercedes independent garage to get the fault codes read (no engine light at this stage). Took it and there were no faults - chap said he was 99.9% certain it was the cat. So my Dad had him put a new one on. Mechanic said car still lumpy but may just be the engine talking time to settle down and adjust. He also said that he re-diagnosed and there was a slight issue with the front O2 sensor, so if he continued to have trouble he would need to replace that.
Car showed no sign of improving - my Dad is really miffed now as he really likes his car and was a reward for retiring after many years graft - so we just managed to catch a local motor factors open and get hold of an O2 sensor as I want to help get it right. I put this on for him and the engine is absolutely no different. It drives OK, but it occasionally holds back and still has this terrible idle.
The only update is the car now has the engine light illuminated.
I would be grateful of any suggestions. I read of vacuum leaks, but then I read that would be picked up by the car and displayed as an error. I would suggest replacing the MAF - but they are £350 and the car shows no fault with this part.
I don't really like driving the car as I am worried of damaging the engine......or is there a chance the car is just making adjustments?
Very frustrating. Many thanks in advance,
Mike.
