C180K (W203) Idle problem

Hi all. Have read through the relevant posts on here and other similar forums, but none solve this problem.

My Dad's C180K has been perfect since he bought it new in 2002. Last week he started it one morning and the engine revved a little higher than normal, but settled down. He went on his journey all fine. However on the way home the car was jerky and developed a really rough idle when stationary.

When he got home the car would barely idle and the exhaust was giving out quite a bit of smoke (possibly water vapour) and a smell of rotten eggs.

Spoke to a recommended Mercedes independent garage to get the fault codes read (no engine light at this stage). Took it and there were no faults - chap said he was 99.9% certain it was the cat. So my Dad had him put a new one on. Mechanic said car still lumpy but may just be the engine talking time to settle down and adjust. He also said that he re-diagnosed and there was a slight issue with the front O2 sensor, so if he continued to have trouble he would need to replace that.

Car showed no sign of improving - my Dad is really miffed now as he really likes his car and was a reward for retiring after many years graft - so we just managed to catch a local motor factors open and get hold of an O2 sensor as I want to help get it right. I put this on for him and the engine is absolutely no different. It drives OK, but it occasionally holds back and still has this terrible idle.

The only update is the car now has the engine light illuminated.

I would be grateful of any suggestions. I read of vacuum leaks, but then I read that would be picked up by the car and displayed as an error. I would suggest replacing the MAF - but they are £350 and the car shows no fault with this part.

I don't really like driving the car as I am worried of damaging the engine......or is there a chance the car is just making adjustments?

Very frustrating. Many thanks in advance,

Mike.

Sorry here you are having trouble. Whereabouts in the country are you. There are members and specialists all over the place.

Is it the 1.8L Kompressor M271? Or the 2.0L M111?

I know that you say C180K, just want to be sure!

Hi R2D2 - we are near Preston in Lancs. Funnily enough I went to school with Kenny Baker's nephew :).

Hi SchwarzesAMG - sorry, I should have included that......it's the 271 engine.

Just been to start it now, and I have to say the idle seemed a lot better.......by no means right, but no longer makes you think the engine is about to disintegrate. The check engine light was out too - but of course that may have come on if we went for a drive.

I keep reading about vacuum leaks being a possibility. About 18 months ago I replaced the serpentine belt tensioner (wow - a big job on this engine!) and I discovered a hose that was perished.....which was replaced. I can't remember what other hoses hide beneath the airbox - but I'm guessing the one I've replaced is the one that presents most problems (MB parts desk said they sold lots of them and the original design was updated), hence my inkling to ignore the possibility of a vacuum leak there. Having said that, the hose had a split about an inch long - and the engine was running perfectly (other than the noisy tensioner) so I'm confused.

Now that the engine seems a little better, we feel it's OK to use the car and we're just praying it will adjust itself. Is this just wishful thinking - or can it take a short while and several engine starts/cool downs to adjust?

Regards,

Mike.

Update - forget that. The car is running no differently. Rough idle that makes you close you eyes, strange noise when changing gear (which I think may be petrol in the exhaust, so that's worrying with a brand new cat). When driving, not too bad but occasional hesitance.

Will have to take it back to the garage on Monday, but if anyone comes up with an idea on here I can try tomorrow.

Cheers.

Hi R2D2 - Ian is actually the chap who replaced the cat.

My Dad will have to ring him next week.......I just thought as I had a couple of days off, I would try to find a fix. It's such a shame, car is a pile of scrap as is.

Regards,

Mike.

Start with the breather hoses first of all!
If you pull the code plz post it over here!]

Search the forums for the m271 breather hoses!
The common one to crack first is the one above the supercharger and all the issues you post sound just like it!

And maybe you should consider a visit first to an Indy and not just a general mechanic, these are quite common issues and easy to fix :) ( well i hope its just the hosw :p )

Hi - this particular hose was replaced about 18 months ago (it was perished and soft, yet caused no problems at the time).

Today I've taken the airbox off and checked all the hoses - they are fine. Engine still a complete mess, I would say undriveable.....on old cars you would think it was on full choke. Was worth a try though.

Regards.

Same Thing

I was just wondering if you have had this fixed because i have the exact same problem cheers

There are many many things that can cause this fault.

Start with looking at the breathers under the air box.
