The air cond blower of my 1997 C200 stopped working suddenly but worked again the next morning. It happened several times last week. No problem with the compressor as it is cold when the blower works. Sometimes, I heard repeated click sounds coming from around the passenger foot well area when the fan speed switch is turned. The fan speed also changes quite frequently by itself when the air conditioner/blower is working.

Is the blower resistor pack or the blower motor or some fan speed controller/relay (where the clicking sound comes from) is on the way out? If it is the relay, where is it located.

Please help

I don't have much experience regarding cars, but I had the same issue as you last week and it turned out to be a faulty heater blower motor.

Thanks. I believe it is the motor as if it is the resistor pack, the motor will still turn. I have replaced the pack before. If it is the blower motor, could the motor be serviced or it has to be replaced?

I was told it can be repaired with some DIY skills, but if you were getting a garage to do the work it wouldn't be work the repair as the labour would out way a replacement plus you will get a 12month warranty with a new motor.

Almost definitely worn brushes in the motor.

You'd get 2 years warranty if you bought the motor from MB but it's nearly £200. A new set of brushes is under a tenner but the labour to fit? This is the kind of job that a washing machine repair man or general handy-man might be able to do but it will require soldering.

If it is just replacing the brushes and soldering, I shall give it a try. I think the motor is just above the resistor pack above the footwell around the pollen filter area. I have replace the resistor pack recently. Many Thanks.

That's exactly where it is, please see my HOWTO for pics :)

Thanks again Shude. Your HOWTO is just exactly what I need. The colour pictures are better than Haynes Manual. I shall have a great time this weekend with the blower motor.

I could not find original replacement brushes for the fan motor but was able to modify two from replacement brushes for Borch electric drill. Replaced the wound out brushes over the weekend but now the fan motor only works on low speed irrespective whether the dial is at 2 or higher numbers.

What else is out? Please help!
