Picked up my first MB yesterday. Today I was getting a warning that the parking brake was engaged despite releasing it.

1) Are you meant to apply the manual parking brake when parked up or is P on the autobox enough?
2) Is there a way to adjust it so it releases better when using the pull handle?

Thanks

On a side note I notice that when driving under about 20 mph a blue P is on the dash. Is this normal?

if I had a pound for every time.....:D

There are a few reasons why this happens.

1. Poor adjustment
2. Lack of use
3. Shackle seized at the shoes.
4. The release lever is being pulled too quickly (most common)

You should always use the parking brake when parked unless you are leaving the car for a few days.

I don't even know if I have that? How would I know?
On the dashboard it shows p symbols in rectangles were you can park. This is on a 2020 c300 and it will park itself according to the manual. I think you would know if you had it, the symbol on the button is like a video camera with a p on it. But to be honest if blackc55 says it's normal it will be, he knows his stuff. I am very much a newbie

Try driving passed a gap ,you should see the blue p and a white arrow , press ok and the car asks if you want to engage active park, press yes and use the foot brake to control speed. Move your hands away from the steering wheel. It can turn quite rapid.

I think the OP's 2011 car will not have the active park assist.

The issue with the parking brake is probably the linkage under the dash (assuming your car is the same as the W204).

OP , just hook your toe under the foot pedal when releasing the useless parking brake . The interweb and this forum is full of fixes. Avoid using it unless you really have to but note that lack of use can make it worse and it will fail come MOT time. Catch 22

Read the manual?
The manual lists every feature it seems and I only got it yesterday. Read through most bits but havnt had time to check what it has and hasn't yet. Short drive today showed this handbrake problem so thought I would ask here if it's something common.

Thanks for your input

Is it something that can be adjusted / lubricated do you know? Or need full replacement?

See post 3 from BlackC55.

He is a Forum sponsor and a very experienced and highly recommended MB Specialist. He has already given you the most likely causes of the problem.

Adjustment and lubrication of the core components is usually the answer.

This is so true, I have been looking through the manual for the new c class and it lists absolutely everything. Don't worry you will get used to it, lots of trial and error. Some things more obvious like having the button or not. Some not so but I believe you can type your VIN into a few websites and get all your added extras listed. There are some really knowledgeable people on here listen to them and ignore any of the less informative ones.

The knowledge base on this Forum is vast thanks to many long term members who willingly give of their time.

What I and other members find rather wearing at times is the lack of any attempt by some (and I am not including the OP or other contributors to this thread in this) to even have the courtesy to introduce themselves but just throw out badly formulated questions in the expectation of an answer and, often having received an answer, not even acknowledgiing it with thanks or even contributing to the the Forum again until the next time they have a problem.

I agree that there are wonderful members on here with a vast array of knowledge and expertise. All I am offering is a friendly word of encouragement, I clearly regard myself as a newbie. I too have asked a couple of questions which a quick google would of given me an answer, but with a simple sentence from one of you long term members and I think I am going to have a much better result. Stand out members for me so far have been trickythemerc, gollom, leejv and definitely blackc55. I have to reach 30 posts before I get full access, I will hopefully not annoy to many people along the way.
