My nearside headlight washwipe isnt spraying on the headlamp, can this cause an MOT failure. I heard that this could be the case. Also to fix the problem can anyone confirm how the system works? I know my BMW E92 had a central pump that covered both sides. looking in my engine bay I cant see anything to work out how the system works.

any wisdom will be appreciated.

It is a requirement for xenon fitted headlamps.

Whether this is tested or not, I don't know... Sorry cant help with any fixing advice, have never had any dealings with those.

Does the jet come out of the bumper when you operate the washers? If the bumper gets hit near the flap it can break the mountings for the jet.

As far as what will fail, if a function is fitted then it must work... unless you fan disconnect both mechanisms from both sides as if they weren't there?

Agreed, ie; 3rd Brake light in rear window, even though the tail lights work. If fitted, must work.(remove the 3rd brake light from the rear window and it will pass) So i would assume an MOT would be a no go for the threadstarter as things stand. I may be wrong.

Wrong, mine haven't worked for years and it's never failed an MOT.
They must be working for Xenon lights though for a different reason.

Pretty much what I said so it's not wrong, OP hasn't stated what the light setup is. So if it's xenon, and they're present on the car, they need to be working to pass

If it has xenons and they're removed, it's not a fail as there isn't any installed

Why do Xenons need it?

To quote you exactly, "As far as what will fail, if a function is fitted then it must work" Completely wrong, I rest my case. Russ

Please, tell us more

Well do not panic, its a fair bet that the tester will not try to clean the headlights,he may not even know that your car has that option.

The tester will check the windscreen washers and will see from the drivers seat that only one headlight washer works.
You should be able to open the washer flap manually by prising it open, it's spring loaded and not attached to the jet. Shine a light in and you will see if the mountings are broken. I think the jet attaches to the underside of the headlight.

Both our SLK and CLK have xenons with headlight washers. The MOT guy has never tested the washers. In theory they need to work but quite likely they won't be tested

They work when you wash the windscreen, and he will check the windscreen washers.

But only if the headlamps are on...

Never been tested on either the C or the CLS (MB main dealer test station), easily noted as neither came out of the test with water on the bonnet or wings...

Plus the headlamp washers only come on after so many swipes of the windscreen wipers IIRC
