c220 cdi and gearshift

does anyone out there understand how the auto gearshift works ; D + & - ? can you explain it to me and when to use it. for one thing, does it change gear or change the "range", or both ?? I've read the book and am more confused.

Leave it in D - you don't have to do anything - it will choose the right gear automatically

If you want to change down a gear manually - push it to the left, if you want to change up manually - push it to the right.

If you've had enough of changing manually, push it to the right a few times until it says D again in the Dash

Or (I only find this out recently!) hold the lever to the right for a moment and it will switch back to D. Holding it to the left drops to the lowest gear possible, depending on how fast you're travelling.
