Hi to you all out there. My recently acquired 2005 registered 53 plate has developed an issue with the parking brake - it would not fully release and unless lifting the pedal with the toe of my shoe.
I have had the linkages heavily treated with a penetrating fluid and greased throughout but it is still occasionally not fully releasing the brake and causing the warning light to make annoying noises.
Trying to lift the pedal with my shoe does not release the parking brake any more.

I am told that this is not uncommon because of lack of use and holding the car on the footbrake and moving from D to P on the road whilst out and about and the continual the skipping of lubrication during service work schedules.

Has anyone had the troublesome fulcrum unit replace and the system set-up again from scratch ?

What kind of likely cost am I looking at and is this strictly a job for an Indy/Specialist ?

Hi have you removed the cover under the back seat and lubricated and checked cables are seated properly?

Hi pattiodors. The system has been freed off with penetrating fluid and fully greased and the cables adjusted and the shoes adjusted through the rear wheels and the rotation set up correctly.

What about the cable from parking brake pedal to rear fulcrum is that nice and free?
What about the switch on the pedal is that in place properly, here is a link to a diagram of all the linkages W203 C180 Parking brake stuck on
I would just start at the pedal and find what is binding etc, It's only cables and linkages so not hard to check yourself.
Good luck

Hi the park brake mechanism sticks at the rachet by where you engage it with your foot . If you get your hand and check the freeplay to see how much there is at the foot mechanism and then adjust at the rear wheels and also check the mechanism under the rear seat as suggested

Hi again to you all and those that have responded to my post.
The work was carried out by an Indy/Specialist after telling me that this is a common problem when the system is not used and the service schedule is skipped (often by the MB Dealership Technicians).

He did say that after the freeing off and greasing and adjustments were carried out then it would involve replacing the mechanism that was situated above the fuel tank (tank out) so that access was fully enabled.

What I was looking for was a figure that would allow my a comparative against what he was likely to be charging me.

Hi again to you all. Having had the parking brake system treated with penetrating fluid and thoroughly greased and adjusted it is seemingly working again.
The next MoT is on the 21st April so the jury is out on the subject of having the system stripped and and replaced with new OEM parts.
