Hi all,

My wife and I are proud new owners of a 2002 C220.

A few questions please:

What do the letters stand for that I have seen on the forum i.e. W202?
Any recommended garages in London for minor repairs?
Can I use kwik fit to do a service?
Tips and things you think I should know?

Thanks for your patience!

Hi and welcome!

W202 refers to the model (c class) built 1993 - 2000. Then yours took over (w203) from 2000 - 2008.

Im up north so dont know of any garages down south, but im sure member son here will be able to point you in the right direction - (keep it MB or indy tho!)

No, i wouldnt use Kwik Fit for a service!

Tips? Keep it OEM and clean - (read rust free!)!!

Thanks, not sure what you mean by indy? (independant?)

Also what does the WS switch do next to my gear stick (AUTO)

W & S, Winter and Summer I believe.

W would generally be used in slippery (snowy conditions)

Where abouts in London are you? This may assist in recommending somewhere to get it serviced.

WS - Thought so but wasnt sure. How do I change it and does it matter if I leave it on W?

North London :-)

Actually it stands for Winter and Standard. Use S all of the time except if it is icey. If you use W all the time there is evidence that it is not good for the box. W means the car starts in second gear.

Just move the switch to the appropriate position. It won't hurt leaving it in W, but will pull away in 2nd gear and change gear at lower engine speeds.
Welcome to the forums.

W mode, (or Cruise) is normally a softer more sedate "wafting" ride. Better mpg sometimes. S mode (or Sport) is a better more spirited drive, better response in the gear changes. Think i heard something about the car setting off in 2nd gear in W but 1st in S??

Yeah indy = independant.....the way to avoid the daylight robbery prices from MB!!

Nice car BTW!!

See above ^^^ Sorry but you are wrong. Sport is not mentioned anywhere in the handbooks not Wafting...

More confused now will look for the instruction manual not sure how to turn the W off its a push button (has W and S written on it) When I press it the dash display doesn't change from the W at all.

sgtbob - Thanks!

No confusion. Just believe me...Good to see you have the handbook though.

Think I had a good deal.

I have the handbook, MOTs, Service book, spare key fob, 71,000 miles, for a heart breaking £6.5k

Filled up yesterday as soon as the reserve warning came up on the dash. I will see how many miles it does and then post back to see if i'm getting good MPG.

Thanks again all.

With the W & S things, it seems Mercedes keep changing their minds (it is S and C in W203 cars). In one person's manual it stated Sport and in our's it state Standard. :o

i have a w 203,the handbook says the "s" is sport mode,it also adjusts suspension brakes etc.But it may be because i have the sport pack

Is it the W/S button?

the button is "s/c"

Sport/comfort ??? The W/S switch in other cars cuts out 1st gear for driving off on ice. It also adjusts reverse gear ratio. Since you say yours also adjusts the suspension setting I'd say it's not the same as the op was asking about.

Standard & Comfort

Use whichever you prefer, you will not damage anything.
Comfort will start in 2nd gear instead of 1st & will change up at lower revs in each gear giving a more comfortable drive.

Standard is what most leave it in for everyday use, but just experiment & see what you prefer.

Just to add to the confusion:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w204-c-class/1339070-what-does-c-s-button-really.html

I think the answer is to read the handbook for your particular car and see what it means. My car has W/S meaning winter/standard. Others will have c/s or something else. I've even seen c/m/s.

Read the book first, then come on here if you still can't make sense of it, and we will undoubtedly confuse you further.
