W209 CLK 270 Avantgarde
1999 V C220CDi Estate, 123k miles.

The car seems to wallow quite a bit on the motorway. Rear tyres are new Goodyear NCT5, fronts half worn Michelins. Tyre pressures checked. I'n not quite sure if this is what people describe as tramlining or not. The car behaves fine in bends and a bounce test on each corner doens't show any shock absorber probs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The bounce test is nearly pointless unless you have a very trained feel.

I bet the dampers are shot and possibly the springs also.

How many miles does the car have on it.?

Would it not also be a handful in corners if dampers & springs were passed it?

You get used to the gradual degredation in ride quality and control.

At 123k I'd say dampers will be past their prime and probably springs as well.

I agree with Dieselman.

My last W202 drove like a pig when I first got it, new ball joints, steering damper and tyres - it drove much better. I then replaced the dampers and it was like a new car. Felt much more stable at speed, didn't have the 'blowing off course' feel to it. Much improved.

At 123K those dampers will be shot, well - they'll 'work' but won't perform as they're supposed to.

Thanks Dieselman & Will,

would it be sensible to start with replacing the dampers?

Yep, i had the same problem on my C250, 4 new shocks later the problem went.

Just found a worn tie bar bush n/s/rear. Will get that changed & report back...
