is there a way of switching on sports mode on a c220 amg sport + coupe 2012 ? ive looked for a button but nothing can be found, someone told me i need to adjust settings on steering wheel ??

I thought the sport varients had different brakes, suspension or exhaust, don't think there is a sport button.

really not sure i am new to merc''s , just that my mrs scirocco has a sports mode button on heres and did expect one on this. car feels a little timmid and could do with something to liven it up a touch, any suggestions welcome

It's a 220 diesel. How lively did you expect it to be? Your gearbox should have comfort/sport/manual and maybe you have an eco button. In sport gearbox mode it'll shift later, and hold gears longer. Also sets off in first gear. Comfort sets off in 2nd gear.

Look to your left in the middle section, few inches from the command dial towards the back of the car is the sport mode button which switches it from Comfort, Sport and Manual

Don't expect it to be amazing, it changes the gear changing throughout the revs, holds onto the gear longer and doesn't pull off in third gear (IIRC)

As its new to you also try a TCU reset, google it and you'll see how to do it

no button there just return switch and storage, this car is manual gears if that makes a difference ? yes it also has eco button, thanks for help , will look up tcu reset

Oh if it's not automatic then the reset can't be done, I thought all w204 sports had that button. It's bottom right of the middle section

just done the TCU reset , was scepticle but thought i would give it a go...holy **** it worked, car feels much more responsive, or is it in my head ? only 2nd owner and first was a lady who maybe plodded around town...dont expect massive power as mentioned above being a 220 diesel but my mrs 2.0 tdi gt scirocco is much more nippy , its a lighter car and may of been chipped i dont know ? ive been offered a remap for £180 that i might try , someone also mentioned de-cat ? would this be worth it ? i also have a nitrous bike with turbo ready to fit to fall back on if i cant get the right buzz from the car ,lol , many many thanks for the info, much appreciated :thumb:

silver square buttons ? all i have is ECO and parking assist , rest are blank

You will never get a buzz from 170bhp in a 2 tonne car.

Get a 350cdi or accept it for what it is - brisk but not blistering.

All the S/C/M button does is related to an automatic gearbox. So you won't have one.

Also, not even sure you've got a transmission control unit, as you're the one who controls it with a stick. :/

You'll find a few things at odds with other cars as it's a manual. Almost all Mercs are autos, and so there's differences when someone tells you about a button you might not have, etc. :thumb:

Or better still get a C63? What a pointless and completely unhelpful response to the OP's question. These things are all relative and despite my dislike of diesels I'm certain that you can have far more of a buzz in a manual C220CDi that's properly set up than you can in say a VW Up Auto. The power to weight ratio of the OP's car is far better than my second car, a Jaguar Mk7M which was great fun to drive (and a model that won the 1956 Monte Carlo rally). As for suggesting that the performance of a 350cdi is "blistering", I have to admire your sense of humour.

Ah, but isn't this all relative?

Going back thirty years, when Escort RS Turbos were considered THE fast car, a good 0-60 was 9 seconds, and if your car hit 60 within 7 to 8 seconds, that was FAST.

My CLK500 was fast, but my 350CDI is even faster, but then again, my mate drives an M5 and he hits 60 in just over 4 seconds, making my car seem sluggish.

Then again, I leave many a car standing as I hit 60, while they are struggling to get to 30.

When you also consider how much safety equipment is installed in modern cars, its amazing these vehicles are so quick. The average Ford Escort weighed in at around 760 kg, give or take, yet the average modern vehicle weighs in the region of 1400 to 2000 kg, which is more or less twice the weight, yet they shift so much quicker.

My mother's Astra VXR was pumping out more BHP than many Ferrari classics.

Briskness is therefore relative to the user, and their experience with cars.

;)

Your inference is incorrect.

Given that the op chose a diesel originally to recommend a 350cdi which has speed but still decent mpg makes far more sense than a 63. Having been in an e350 cdi it's top of my list for a next car. I would not choose a big petrol now, I begrudge the fuel and tax costs.

I just did the transmission reset and got almost 80mpg on the way back from work! Though the majority of the journey involves a 50 limit...

Does the TCU reset also work for W212's? I have a E250 and not sure if I'm used to it now but doesn't feel as quick anymore as when I first purchased, sports mode helps but MPG definitely takes a dip.

But as the Fox pointed out, things have moved on. My 2012 C350 petrol with the M276 engine has 306 lively horses available and is in the same tax band as the CDI. Fuel consumption is slightly heavier than the diesel version (except for short journeys from cold where it's probably better) but with the higher cost of diesel fuel the difference in fuel costs becomes much closer. I don't have to worry about DPFs nor disturbing neighbours with rattles at start up.

But that's all by the by. The point here is that every car has its advantages and disadvantages, with a wide range of finances, needs and preferences for different people. So suggesting that someone buy a different car when they're asking for advice on their new purchase is not helpful. It's like the old tale of a motorist stopping in the Irish countryside to ask a local for directions to Dublin; his answer: "I wouldn't start from here"!

Kind of works it's mostly placebo, but does make a difference, it will learn your driving style definitely worth it but not sure on other models :(

Ke, fair enough. In that case you just have to enjoy it for what it is. We're in the peak district, up hill and down Dale and I'm getting over 40mpg, pretty good for a heavy car and an older 170bhp 646 engine. We are well equipped, comfy, wafty, torque making easy work of hills and that's what gives me pleasure from this car. That said I might remap it at some point as I know it can take it without issue. The op could remap his 651 to high on 200bhp which would make it a bit more fun.
