Just thought I'd share this for those encountering the dreaded DPF failure.
Just had mine removed and cleaned. Immediate improvement in mpg, now showing high forties at motorway speed.
Total cost was £400.
£150 to clean, now 90% flow rate.
£200 to remove and refit replacing an exhaust senor as well.
Local mechanic removed and DPF cleaned by expert in Marsh Barton, Jeff Moore's Garage EX2.
Great result and hope it may help others.

What was the failure mode - just too much ash content?

Hi, yes too much ash and constant warning light on dash together with limp mode.
Now the 'Bl***y EGR has packed up, just disconnected it and runs fine.It's not blocked, the electrics have failed.

Ide not waste time with all that. Ide buy a new dpf or pay the £400 towards removal of EGR and a remap. Its good what they done and have sorted your fault though.
