C220D AMG Line Wheels Rubbing

I ran 255s winters all round on my E63, so that meant on the 9.5” rears too. They worked ok but definitely looked stretched, and left the rim edge more open to kerb damage.

I doubt this is what you want to hear, but I think the real answer to your problem is to swap the wheels out for something with the correct width and offset.

Completely agree with you all! I think its time to look for some alloys to go on the back. If anyone has any recommendations would be good to hear! Ideally black 🤣

And on that note I want to say thank you to you all on here and thank you all for taking time to reply its very much appreciated.

Thank you all

Dan

Unfortunately, I think you'll be looking for new/replacement alloys all round. Suggest trying to find out (using the VIN) what the car was originally fitted with.

If its an AMG Line car, which I think it may well be given that it has the plastic-tab wheel arch extensions (SE and Sport models don't have these), then the original rims were probably 5-spoke 18" 'staggered' items. Something like this:

Fronts: A205 401 1100, Tyres 225/45 R18 95Y
Rears: A205 401 1200, Tyres 245/40 R18 97Y

Good luck.

Is there the possibility of machining the (wheel's) mounting surface back a touch to get the required clearance? Not ideal but if possible, expedient.

Not sure how the OP's insurer would take that. Modifying wheels is unlikely to be well received IMHO. YMMV of course. Basic problem here is that they are not the correct wheels for the car.

According to the data card, OP's car was factory fitted with AMG 18's with mixed tyres, so as you say staggered fitment and probably the 7.5"/8.5" 5 spokes.

The machining - not encroaching on the spokes or it's a non-starter - would never be noticed. A very rare instance of 'what they don't know won't hurt them'.
Anyway, aren't wheels routinely machined during refurbishment?

Yes, the face of diamond-turned wheels are machined during refurbishment. That is not the issue here, is it?
Machining the wheel to adjust the hub interface/offset is not something I would recommend. I also do not recommend the use of spacers to go the other way. You may of course have different views.

I always understood that plastic trim to be there so they could fit wider wheels and the wheel not poke out further than the ‘body’

They used to do this on many other models inc the W202 with rubber arch extensions for bigger wheels.

Ultimately, sack them off and get some originals. It’ll look and drive better and prevent any problems in the future.

Alloys are 9.5J so I'm wondering if I should put 255s on

Apparently 255 is fine for 9.5J.
