Hi,

New guy on this and just a little bit stuck. Got my car June 2020 and was fully serviced NOT by mercedes dealer. I’ve checked my engine oil level and it seems to show that it’s just below medium level.
What is best recommended oil? I would like to go for an above average engine oil. I’ve been looking at Shell Helix 0W-30 Ultra ECT C2/C3 VAG 504/507 - 5Ltr.
Is this suitable for my car, or if there is any other good recommended engine oil to use, please let me know.
Thanks

Your car will likely have been filled from the factory with oil to meet MB Spec Sheet 229.52, so I would stick with that.

Either 5W-30 or 5W-40 will do.

And you can choose whichever brand you like.

That said... as long as it's above the minimum when fully hot, it's fine.

If adding engine oil, then make sure that it is well below the max level when the engine is fully hot.

Overfilling a Diesel engine with oil could prove to be a fatal (for the engine) mistake... and even if not, you are risking getting annoying 'Remove oil' messages on the dash.

I've used Mobil 1 since the 1980's and have never been disappointed with it. Go to Costco, £31 for 5 litres.

The OP's suggestion does carry 229.51 & 52 , so also being VW 504.00 507.00 means it is indeed above average as the VW spec spanks the MB .

Though these combination of specs are available cheaper .

I did a oil change with 0W40 Mobil 1 in a Toyota Celica I'd had for 4 years at the time , a month later down the coast low oil came up , it'd burnt off , never used it again, poor oil volatility performance .

I used Mobil 1 for 13 years on my CLK, from new to 140,000 miles, never even needed to be topped up between services, with intervals of up to 17,000 miles each year.

The OP is looking about a top-up, not changing the engine oil, so it's better not to mix two different standards, and since his car will most likely have MB 229.51 or MB 229.52 in it now, I suggest that this is what he should be using (if a top-up is indeed needed).

Do you know a spec is a spec and brand is insignificant ?
I'm well aware of that up to a point, but my point was you used Mobil 1 for a month and said it had "poor oil volatility performance ", I used it for 13 years & 140,000 miles and found you couldn't be more wrong. As for spec & brand, Mobil 1 was 100% fully synthetic when Shell & all the others were claiming to be fully synthetic but were not. Shell etc could claim to be fully synthetic in the US & other markets but in Germany where the standards were higher, only Mobil 1 could claim to be 100% fully synthetic.
As a turbo car owner since the very first turbo cars went on the market, when mineral oil on the turbo turned to carbon when you switched the engine off, Mobil 1 was the only oil that protected turbo charged engines, It's never let me down for the last 40 years.

If you research Mobil 1 you will find similar stories to contradict your personal experience .

Forget brand , a spec is a spec and VW 504.00 507.00 is higher than 229.51 / 52 , so get one that's both as .52 ace's the efficiency .

No one can contradict my personal experience, I've used Mobil 1 since the early eighties and have used more Mobil 1 that anyone who contradicts it, I value my experience of Mobil 1 over 40 years over anyone who used it last week and didn't like it.

There we go a blinkered view of retail purchase justification .

I used it once and it evaporated , I had the vehicle 6 / 7 years .

Inmobile 1 , no thank you....

So I've used it for 40 years on many cars with high performance engines without any complaint, you used it once, and I have the blinkered view? Incredible!

My car requires MB 229.51 Low SAPs C3
So double check the oil you buy is to the correct spec.

I was asked if I wanted the MB service plan when I ordered the car. I didn’t but had a nice chat with the sales executive who was very knowledgable. One thing he said was to always fill the engine with the correct spec oil. This goes for all the main engine fluids, oil, coolant and gearbox.
