Driving on the motorway - nice steady speed- I noticed smoke behind me. As I'd just passed a lorry i thought it was from him but soon it became apparent it was me! On pulling over there was no obvious smoke. I looked underneath and saw fluid pouring from under the car which quickly stopped. I checked oil and water which were ok and restarted the car. No warning lights, no leak, no smell and it sounded ok- I drove on.
Two days later again smoke then a "kick" in the back and the auto box dropped into third. Again I pulled over - fluid leaking in the same place (by the time I'd looked underneath and walked round to get a better view it had stopped, but it is on the RHS under the driver's footwell). Re-started the car, box worked fine etc, so I am reasonably sure it is a gearbox fault but is the leak a symptom or the cause and why would it be better after stopping for a minute or two? Would it be pressure build up in the box?
