Guys

I'm looking for a c class sport and need advice.....which model should i go for? I've been looking for a C240 sport but can anyone tell me the difference with the C230k..? also the maintenance on the supercharger?

There is an old discussion here:
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=11365

However in basic terms the c230 kompressor uses slightly less petrol, makes slightly more noise, costs slightly less to service and is slightly quicker than the c240.

The engine is "smoother" on the c240.

There is no maintenance schedule for the kompressor on the c230k.

C230K si the one I would choose...!

C240 is all show and no go - the engine is nice to hear/listen and thats it and the car does not shift when you need it to - especially from a stand still.

C230K or even C200K if a much more lively engine and the Kompressor is great for acceleration...:)

I was not impressed with a W203 C240 (which is actually a 2.6 Litre) engine.

Me neither, tried a few of them when the W203 first came out, wasn't impressed at all. Only thing it had going for it was the silkier sound being a V6. Was expecting it to perform better being a 2.6!

The 230K is a supercharged 4 cylinder engine
The 240 is a 2.6 litre 6 cylinder (V6) engine (at least I think it was the same engine in the W202 & W203?)

The 230K's have a unique sound :)

The w202 c240 is a 2.4l AFAIK.

As I said on KillerHertz's thread, the C230K wins over the C240 any day. Strangely enough, it had the fastest quoted 0-62mph time of all C Classes - at least in 1999 when I got mine.
You can be burbling along behind someone, and , spotting an overtaking opportunity, floor it, wait 1/3sec to drop 1-2 gears and for the Kompressor to spin up...then all hell breaks loose - revs climb rapidly to 4,000+ and you disappear into the distance.
It always brings a smile to my face!

Actually there was a break in production of AMGs when the C36 finished and C43 started, the c230k would be the fastest for a bit. Remember when the Lamborghini Diablo became the fastest production car again when the Mclaren F1 ceased production? ;)

On paper the c230k has the best fuel economy of the petrol models but that ain't worth the paper it's etc.

Will! Whoops!
Sorry, I should have clarified - nonAMG - C Class
I must be more careful how I phrase things!
The point I wanted to make was that the C230K was nippier than the C280 at that time - at least in the brochure blurb I read (and still have).

I agree Les - I'm only Jesting ;)

I did have this C280 vs. C230K discussion on here before, but apparantly someone thinks the C280 pipped it, I don't know why?!?

Anyway, C230K is plenty quick enough for an A to B car, possibly lighter than the 280 as well?

Shude - I take it the break would have been around the time of the facelift? Come to think of it, you don't see many 'R' registered C36s, but I have seen one :)

I've dug out an old issue of Autocar magazine and these are the road test figures in order of 0-60 times.Note: these cannot be compared to makers or other magazine results as methods differ.

1994 C36 AMG
0-60 6 sec
30-70 5.2 sec
152 MPH

1993 E320 W124
0-60 7 sec
30-70 6.5 sec
142 MPH

1995 E320 W210 (IL 6)
0-60 7.5 sec
30-70 7.2 sec
142 MPH

1997 C280 V6
0-60 7.7 sec
30-70 7.1 sec
140 MPH

1994 C280 (IL 6)
0-60 8 sec
30-70 7.2 sec
140 MPH

Autocar never actually tested the C230 K however it appears to
have the same top speed as the C280's and a 0.2 sec quicker 0-60 time at circa 7.8 sec.
Note how quick the W124 E320's are.Checking my handbook's this is down to low body weight by todays standards .The W202 C-class with the same 2.8 inline six fitted and 4 speed auto is the same weight 1490 KG (before options) as the E280.
