A few days ago I was behind a Barry for a coupe of miles in what I think was a Daihatsu Charade, very early 90's type thing with a huge fart cannon. He was driving like a **** and revving at every possible moment.

As we appoached a set of lights on a dual carrageway he decides to quickly change lanes so we stop side by side.

As he was revving the engine and the road ahead was clear I had to let him see my twin chrome tail pipes at the lights ;)

Up until 40-50ish I was clearly winning and about a car in front, then woooooosh! it burned it past me and I gave up (another set of lights in the distance).

I guess he had Turbo lag, anyone know anything about these barry rockets? Im sure I saw an episode of Wheeler dealers or used car road show saying how quick they were?

I think it was this:

Oh yeah, he had a £2.99 Coupe badge on the back aswell.

yeah , those are pretty nippy.

1.3 turbos. Friends brother had one when i was at school. Ended up in a field but from what i remember it was pretty rapid for such a small car.

Charade 1.3 GTti....fast little car....

Ha ha, quite funny.....for him...:D

Any idea what speed they run out of steam at? Im hoping it would have been a different story should it have been up to 100Mph, 70Mph ;)

I was in W and not S... in my defence :D

*Khz cancels order for an AMG badge*

If I was a yank, I would pronounce you "Owned" but I'm not so I won't.

Very embarassing..!

Could it have been NOS or somthing?

We were up to about 50ish and then it was like I wasnt moving!

Im not embarassed, if it was 1.1tl Fiesta, then yes.

He would have given an AMG a run for the money for that split sec ;).... maybe

I was thinking the same thing. Whatever it was , well modified i thinks.

Its a sleeper, i wouldnt worry about it. They were just lucky it wasnt a C43

Just learn from it, don't race little shoe boxes! :D

yep i get a lot of boy racers in their japanese turbo cars trying it on when im in the 500E.. and they normally have the lead up to around 60-70 mph... thats when they run out of steam..

I had one of those charades ages ago.. a lot of fun..

You'll need to get an AMG badge ordered quickly to compete with a coupe mate! :D

Maybe he's had a bigger turbo bolted onto it? Could be anything really, plus those things weigh less than the average Mercedes doorcard

There was a thread about these a little while ago on the CRX-UK forums (I think). I seem to recall the general consensus was that they were rare, fast and were generally written off by 17 year old idiots or just rusted away.

I would have thought it would be similar in performance to a C240 to be honest at lower speeds, especially if yours is an auto.

Still his crisp packet with a lawn mower engine may be quicker but yours is a Mercedes.

I wonder if theres a thread on a Barry forum somewhere:

"I waz @ dees lights, and I Merked this Merc, it was like a 9ltr thing and I nuked him proper styliee like."

I think this guy's getting a hard time. The GTti is a fast car in standard trim, and very tuneable.

Power/Weight: 122bhp/tonne
0-60mph: 7.9s
0-100mph: 27.2s
Std 1/4m: 16.4s @ 84mph
50-70mph: 4.9s

I would love one myself. They were underated back in the day, and now all but forgotten. Lost out to mainstream models at the time, and so never really caught on - Swift GTi of the period was also underated.

There's always a bigger fish out there - I think you found a smaller one out there with a nasty bite!! ;)

:D

Unlucky dude, sucks to be you! :D
