I have a C250 2012 estate which is not starting, I know it’s not the battery as the lights come on and you can turn on the radio/cd player.

Put the key in the ignition and turn it and there is nothing.

I have the Mercedes service plan and RAC come to look at it, he tried a few things, said about the steering lock, and disconnected the battery and reconnected it to reset things but no good. He said it might be a dead module?

Anyway it’s been taken to a Mercedes garage due to it being on the service recovery, so when I get the call Monday or Tuesday about their diagnosis does anyone have any advice on what it might be or anything to be wary of?

Might be worth mentioning but it was in for a service only a couple of weeks ago with Mercedes.

Maybe difficult to know from such a vague description, but is it likely to be a specific issue, and is it likely to cost?

Failed EIS or ESL is fairly common on Mercs generally.

Just because the lights and CD player come on doesn't rule out a battery problem.

Both of those do not pose a significant load on the battery, the starting circuit does.

Have you measured the battery voltage with no load to be sure?

The fella from RAC was the one that did some checks, I know he disconnected the battery to reset things, so maybe he checked the battery voltage as part of his checks. I don’t know to be honest.
It’s at the garage now so I presume they’ll check these things when they do their diagnosis.

The garage has told me it needs a new steering lock, I’ve been quoted £1100.

Does that sound right or are they charging over the top?

I had this with mine....... in my case a new battery in the key was the fix.........occasionaly wouldnt start... then no start.....been fine. since
