C250 Td funny noise

No I haven’t tried that. When I did the compression check, it held the 400psi compression on the clock. The noise is it in when the engine is cold and warm.

I had/have the same problem. fitted new injectors (united diesel fuel injection services £215 - no fitting oct 2010) , it still made the noise but not when really hot. I use millers, close the windows and put the radio on when the engine is cold. turn the heater on too to cheer you up. I wondered if the injection point had moved as parts aged but was told it would not.

Just thought I’d update this as I’ve come to a dead end. I’ve done about 500miles, the noise now comes and goes.

It’s still between idle and 1200rpm. After around a 40 mile run it’s quiet. It occasionally comes back and then goes again. Does anyone know how the sprocket on the front of the pump works? Any advice appreciated.

Does anyone know how the timing sprocket works? Does it advance the timing once started, any info appreciated. Just wondering if there could be a fault with it.

It's a centrifugal advance mechanism - remarkably similar in operation to the flyweights which used to be fitted in the base of distributors.

Is there anything to check that you know of? When I altered the timing at the top of the pump it did reduce the clatter noise.

I finally solved the problem, it turned out the oil hole in the centre of the sprocket was blocked. The clatter noise has totally gone now.

That's a pretty incredible fix. Has this engine not been run using diesel specific oil?

I think the noise was always in the car, it got worse after the injectors were reconditioned. I’ve always used 5W40 fully synthetic oil that is recommended for the car. The hole was completely blocked solid. I don’t have any pictures of when it was blocked but I have some of the sprocket taken apart if anyone’s interested.

I'm guessing Millers then, in which case that's strange.

It sounds like you engine may require a flush or two.

Well done on solving the noise!! :thumb:

Mine still makes the noise and still has a few air bubbles going around.

Funny you say about the Timing,

It seems when I start mine from cold, it doesnt do it that much or that loudly, but once its been running for a couple of minutes it really starts to clatter and make the noise. I was thinking possibily somthing to do with Cold starts. :wallbash:

How easy is this sproket to remove?

Do you think an amount of flushing would have cleared the blockage?

Regards

Jon

Mine used to sound the same as your videos of the noise. On first start up the noise wasn’t that noticeable, within a few minutes the clatter would become loud. It would then settle once warm at idle but still noisy around 1200rpm.

I doubt that any amount of engine flush would have disturbed the block as it had gone into a solid lump.

Yes, it does sound like its the same problem!!

How easy is it to get the sproket out, how long did it take you to do?

thanks

Jon

It’s hard to say really, I didn’t do it all in the one day. The sprocket is easy enough to get too, keeping the timing in place was the most difficult part. I have a pdf document for instructions on how to remove the injector pump, I can send them too you if you’d like. I’ve also the part number for the sprocket as well.

Hi guys, sorry to jump on your post but im in need of some advive on my c250(non turbo) regarding air in the clear pipes.

Have changed all 6 clear pipes
Fuel filter inc o ring
pre filter inc o ring
stop solenoid o ring
cooper washers and o ring on banjo bolt
delivery and return rubber hoses
but ive still got air in pipes 32 83 74 56
pipes 95 and 119 have no air

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanx Roy.

The leak is either at the fuel heater or before. Check the rubber pipes clips at the rear of the engine bay.

The reason for no air in the return pipes is that it's being bled off at the filter.
