Hi all,

C250D is finally (almost:rolleyes:) back on the road -

{History: refurb head, injectors, new glow plugs, de-glazed bores, new piston rings, fuel timing re-set to 12 degrees ATDC, factory setting 14 degrees ATDC}

Engine is all back together and running sweet, re-timed fuel injection yesterday with MB tool which eliminated diesel knock with re-furb injectors.

The car has been on all fours for the past 12 months in my garage, let the back two wheels down of the axle stands then did the same with fronts which were on ramps (backwards to avoid roll back)

Took her for a spin, nice and punchy engine but two problems quickly surfaced - brake peddle started to go to the floor  and subsequently left a big puddle on my nice clean drive  looks like offside front brake pipe where it meets the inner wing has gone -

Scond problem, each gear change is hard, you can really feel it punch into gear each time only up though I think-

This is the really basic four speed auto without any bells and whistles (c1994 early 722 box), is there a vac pipe which helps the shifts?

Prior to the engine rebuild it had a filter change and new ATF inc torque convector drained and was silky smooth for 2k.

There is quite a big air lock in the water system as the top hose is not even hot along with the reservoir/filler tank - also is water only at the mo until I measure out enough anti freeze

Help appreciated :thumb:

If fluid doesn't fix it look at the MAF as that can induce hard shifts.

Removed the front off side brake pipe, (not the rubber hose)

The small part where it sits on the foam padding when entering the wing had badly corroded and had a fracture to half of the pipe

Fortunately the other side takes a different rout avoiding the padding so no probs there -never replaced one of these before, is it best to make one up from brake tube or buy form MB?

On the hard shift, i only took it to the bottom of the road so didnt get a chance to go through all the gears - after standing for a year do the boxes need to run for a bit perhaps to circulate the oil again??

There'll be a vac pipe which goes from the injector pump down to the transmission. However, a leak in any of the vac pipes under the manifold will cause this problem.

Cheers NC,

I saw the white nylon one but will pop the manifold off for closer inspection tomorrow -

Would the lack of water in the top part of the coolant system make any difference?

had a bit of luck with the brake pipe this pm, popped into one of those small auto shops - bring old pipe in tomorrow and they will make one up £8 inc fittings, very good value and will take my business there in future :thumb:

The hard brake pipes aren't silly money from MB (I've just looked up some pipes for my W124, and they're about a fiver each). The advantage is that these brake pipes don't contain copper - cooper is not good for brake systems with ABS.

There's a plug behind the top hose elbow where you'll be able to bleed the coolant in the engine, and, if you take a pipe off near the duo-valve, you'll be able to bleed the heater too.

Had problems today with MB finding the right part -

I have EPC but didnt show correct brake pipe far to short, theres was the same - as you say it's not too expensive £21 + but you still have to bend them yourself which is ok as have mini pipe bender, the problem is they are too short to start with - not sure what to do.

I could pop into the small shop and ask them if they use this stuff

3/16" X 25 FT CUPRO NICKEL (KUNIFER) BRAKE PIPE TUBING on eBay (end time 20-Jul-09 16:00:59 BST)

Would this be ok with ABS systems?

What a pain, bleed nipple snapped off - even bought a set of deep sockets to get them off - aggghhhhhh...:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

Some the alloys used on the car seem so soft, not like stainless more like mild steel -

I'm off for a
