Hi Guys,

Just bought my c270 cdi 2003 and my god is it quick!

I have a few gripes that I hope you guys can clear out.

1)When I accelerate from standstill or even want to pick up a little speed I can see black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I know this is the norm with diesels but even when wanting to go from 20-40 under light acceleration I can still see a little black smoke. The car does need a service so I hope its that and ties in with my next problem

2) when the car idles the rev meter jumps a little every 2 seconds from 1000rpm to 1200 rpm.

3) Is there a CD changer in the glove box? I have something that looks like a changer there are slots for 6 cds but cannot get it to play

Thanks ppl!

If you think the 270 is quick, try the 320!!

1) sounds like your injectors need a good clean out - Forte or Millers should do the trick followed by an 'Italian MOT'!!

2) that could possibly be a MAF problem or dirty EGR valve and associated pipework. Is it 'chipped' or tuned at all do you know?

3) A multi-changer in the glovebox would be marked as such - what you have there is a Fischer CD holder. 6 drawers with little push buttons?

Only sold my 270 a week ago and am missing it terribly already!

Thanks Kwakdonut

I do not think the car is tuned. Previous owner was a lady :P

Will flush it out with millers though.

Thanks for the reassurance. I managed to leave a bmw 325 in a cloud of smoke last night after he flashed me to get out of the way :D

Are you sure he flashed you to get out of the way and not just put his headlights on to see through your smoke trail?

Welcome - you will enjoy your car ....sounds as though you already are..:D

Hi, i have the exact same car, an 04 version. It does exactly the same as yours from pulling away and probably means that the previous owner pootled about in it and didn't put their foot down.
I notice it mainly when entering a motorway on the slip - or racing away erm no, not racing, i mean pulling off from traffic lights ;)

It's fine if it's BLACK smoke, BLUE is different and you should try to take note of that. If it's blue can be fuel or oil burn off.

And finally - if it's pouring out at any point then it might be a turbo pipe problem because I had split mine within a day of having my car. (oops)

Oh, and I agree, they do shift big stylee - tried putting pedal to metal yet?? It actually won't LET you look like a boy racer....Sooooooooo refined :D :D
One of the most satisfying parts of diving my car is when I want to accelerate away from something and I don't even have to try in order to do it - I just touch the accelerator and whooosh, I'm gone :D

You'll know if there's a problem with the EGR - serious smoke!

Lady owner sounds like pootling ;) .

Try Millers or Shell V-power diesel, BP Ultimate, etc. and give it an Italian tune-up.

What's an italian tune up? (apologies for being a noob!)

What would you recommend so that the car remains in one piece?

I've already had a bad experience with turbo diesels with my old 320d where the high pressure pump failed causing me to scrap the car for a quarter of what I paid for it.

I know to let the temp warm before giving it some welly and to let it cool down before switching the engine off.

Once warmed up, give it a few trips up to the red line to clear any crap out of the system.

Had an Alfasud once -- after 6 months it was spluttering etc so I took it to the dealer..Mechanic came out with me and asked me to drive.....he then grinned and said every month it needs an Italian tune.....raced it up the dual carriageway in 3rd...when it hits the red line ease off the throttle and hold it (in the orange for the sud) for 5 mins.....watch the sh!t come out the back.....

Hope that helps...:D

me too I had an Alfasud TI QV (105HP) but even if I'm Italian I've never heard about this italian tune up:D

by the way actually I've a C270 (yes between the two there was many other cars:) ) and I confirm that blake smoke is quite usual flooring the pedal but only for the very first seconds probably till you clear the dirts that tend to settle during normal cruising

yes it's a good engine, ..ok the 320cdi should be better but for me it's a good compromize between power and consumption

The smoke, as with all diesels, will be more apparent at night when there's a car following you, and their headlights light up the particles.

The particles are there in the day but less apparent without illumination.
