I have a c280 sport on a 96 p plate and 114k on the clock. It has been regularly serviced but when up to temperature I am getting an occasional 'spitting' almost like a bag of hammers from the engine when accelerating away form hazards. This does not happen when cold and is intermittent. I eventually took it to our nearby merc specialist who put it on a diagnostic test and it spit out the codes for a faulty Air Mass Meter (At £180 a throw) I tried a proven one of a friends vehicle and the problem is still the same. I am told it could be the oxygen sensor - would this give out the same fault code? and would I get an engine warning light on if this failed?
Any help appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like the mixture has gone too lean. Either sensor could cause this.

Also it could be due to low fuel pressure causing starving under load. Have the pressure checked.
