C350 CDI - 2010 - Loud Bang followed by a Burning Smell - Possibly linked to Reverse Gear.

I have a 2010 C350 CDI. I reversed out of my drive a short while ago, and just as I went to drive off after engaging 'drive', there was a huge bang. Initial thoughts were that a branch had fallen from a tree onto the roof. I got out to inspect but there was nothing visible. I then considered that it may have been a tyre blowing out, but that wasn't the case either. No dashboard / warning lights came on etc. I decided to take the car along the road to check if any symptoms or alarms came on, but nothing. I stopped after a mile or so and reversed into a parking area. When I engaged reverse, I had to give the accelerator a bit of a push, and it made o bit of a jump when it started moving, so it sounded like something was sticking. I repeated this a couple of times and the same happened again. When I got out of the vehicle, I could smell burning (possibly rubber) for the first time. I then drive home and the burning smell was still there when I got out. However, I could engage reverse gear without any trouble again. Is anyone able to advise as to what could have happened?

Many thanks

Maybe a suspension spring ?
Rear parking brake pads inside the rear drum ?
Something else brake related ?

I have taken it for a short drive and there's a rattle coming from the rear (at least I think it's the rear) when I go over bumps, and a light humming sound too.

I would agree something fell apart in parking brake sounds likely, could be a spring but would have to be a major failure, which would cause a bad ride and even noticeable ride hight change. Also easy to see assuming you can poke your head underneath

Broken exhaust bracket can cause a humming sound

I suspect the parking brake could be to blame . Have you had it rebuilt at all ? Does it hold the car on a slope after 5 clicks on the pedal ?

I can't explain the loud bang but here is what I would do. Chock the front wheels , car in neutral , handbrake off get a trolley jack under the rear diff , lift the back wheels off the ground and try to turn them by hand . You will know straight away if the brake shoes are at fault.

You are going to have to lift it to check springs and links as discussed anyway.

Let us know what you find :thumb:

bang and humming noise; without other hints that would be loosen boost pipe, but you would be on limp too, then.

Burning smell could be just regen which is not been completed and car continues doing it when possible.
