Car
No MB atm. Lotus Elise 111R Rotrex. BMW 440i GC.
In the morning
Met Paul and his colleagues at eurocharged / S2Smart in Watford today to get my 2010 C350CDI (231ps) fettled. The workshop is based in a small, light industrial park, between Rickmansworth and Watford. A couple of other garages are based there too, ProAlfa and CKS. I was greeted by a whole gaggle of Smart cars, a few coupes, 4-4 and plenty of 4-2s.

After pleasantries were exchanged, the car was checked over with a Star diagnostic machine, some of the wheel speed sensors registering an error 3k miles ago, probably originating from when the pads and discs were changed. I opted for a before and after dyno run, as I like to see some figures. I waited for a Golf to be seen to - the owner was very pleased with the result.

Dyno time
My car was reversed onto the dyno and strapped down. A reading was taken before any changes were made to get a baseline figure. The result was 255bhp and 444llb ft or 600Nm, which was quite a surprise for me, especially the torque result, as these numbers are more akin to the facelift 350CDI. I've been around long enough to know figures from dynos can vary on how they are operated and even how tight the car is tied down will influence the numbers, but for my purposes it'll give a good indication of the percentage difference.

ECU was removed from the car, lid removed and the ecu connected to the laptop via a box of tricks to read the existing map. The maps were identified and changes made and the checksum recalculated before being written back to the ecu. After this was done, the ecu was reconnected and the car started. Another power run was made and the figures were 293 bhp and 538llb ft (730Nm). So the car gained 15% power and more importantly 21% torque.

What is the car like to drive now ?
It felt a bit lacking before - now it feels much keener. It is still smooth to drive. Mid-throttle response is stronger, but not twitchy or oversensitive. My drive back home was in heavy traffic, so I didn't really get much chance to test it.

I am a little wary of DPF issues and asked Paul to check the DPF using Star, which showed it had 3g of soot, so it appears to be working fine. I have been filling the car with Shell Vpower diesel as it is supposed to burn with less soot, so I'll keep using that.

Fuel consumption-wise
I've only driven 50miles since the remap so much too early to come to any conclusions, but it doesn't seem any worse and The car can accelerate harder in higher gears than before, without changing down, so I expect the mpg to improve.

Eurocharged was promoting their diesel remaps at £299 in December and additional £75 for the dyno runs.

Good result! Almost exactly the same before and after bhp/torque as mine (249 bhp/570 nm and 289/690 nm), the midrange is very addictive in mine now! And great price, I paid 690 euro in Belgium for this

Price has gone back up now.

The C300CDI has the same engine as the C350CDI but with a lower tune map as standard, like the difference between a 220CDI and the 250CDI I believe. We don't get the 4matic in the UK either, I would've gone for one.

I'm going to keep any eye on the fuel consumption and report back.

What has your experience been like ?

Following the facelift the C300CDI is the renamed 231 bhp C350CDI engine of the pre-facelift model. The C350CDI now has 265 bhp and has a few hardware changes (turbo and lower compression).

So far I am enjoying it very much! Drove to Denmark from Belgium the day after the remap, 980 km in 7 hours, average speed 142 kph and 9 l/100 km, which I think is very reasonable for that kind of speed.

Good results there.
Did you get a print out of the dyno graph?

Sorry not the electronic copy but this was a photo from my phone of the dyno screen.

That's looking very good. Really good gains through the rev range, big increase in the area under the graph, will be a good noticeable difference on the road.

Being new to Mercedes, is that the sort of gains that I could expect to see with my cls 320?

Did I read somewhere that the gearbox needs re-mapped too?

Cheers - ferg

Hi Anders
9l/100km, thats 30mpg at an average of 88mph - so between 95-100mph most of the time ;-) we wouldn't do that in the UK of course .....

Ferg - if your CLS 320 is a diesel, I'd expect decent results from a remap.

Car is still smooth to drive, engine behaves like it did before at slow speeds, no downsides I've seen. The upside is that it accelerates more readily. For anyone considering it, I'd recommend Savman (Paul) and Eurocharged.

I opted to leave the TCU as standard. I don't need it any more sensitive or higher stall speed etc for drag racing. I want to take advantage of the higher torque and stay in a higher gear than before.

As an aside, from my limited experience, 4 cyl TDI seem to get better % results, compared with the 6cyl. Passat 110ps remapped to 150ps. Golf 1.9TDI 130ps to 186ps. Audi A6 2.5TDI 150ps to 190ps.

Thanks for that 6cyl. Yes it is a CDi so think I might need to look into this.

Does anyone know a tuner in the West of Scotland / Central area that they would recommend?

Not urgent, probably not till April as I work away.

Where are you in Aberdeen as that is where my evo goes for all its tuning, mapping and servicing.

Do you map on the dyno each car individually? Or is it a generic map (one fits all)?

If generic map how do you check all readings like afr's, boost, etc are correct?

Cheers - ferg

Who do you deal with in Aberdeen?

Only rolling road I believe to be in Aberdeen is at Wallace Performance, so I am guessing Savman is using either a generic map flashed on to every car, which I personally would not use, or he would need to live map on road and that requires a private road as speeds are high..... done road map on my evo but prefer dynos.

We can offer both generic and custom files as long as the workshop has a dyno and internet connection we can remote in. Annoucement will be later this week on the facilities.

Map from your ecu is extracted by obd2 or directly from the ecu dependent on whether the ATP (anti tampering protection) has been cracked or not. This is then loaded onto a laptop with tuning software that decodes the data into maps that affect the various running characteristics of the engine and throttle. With a basic remap on a diesel you can get away with light - medium increase of fuelling, boost, smoke and throttle sensitivity without live mapping. Live monitoting will be of benefit if you are going for the last 10-20% where you need to make sure you're not pushing egt too high etc.

Good results, the 350cdi is a good starting point for power.

Our RA350 started quite low in power for some reason (was a dealer car so wasn't mapped already) Posted 238BHP and 455lbft after mapping we got 324BHP and 577lbft.

Haven't had the chance to stretch the car's legs so to speak, but drove it this weekend and it definitely pulls harder than straight after the remap. Car seems more effortless to drive. Well worth the time and money.
