C350e owners club

Navigation keeps rebooting itself when driving and cancels the route. Great fun when trying to navigate around London

Hey Brollyman, did your dealer get that problem sorted out? I have the same problem: my COMAND unit reboots every 3 minutes, but only whenever route guidance is active. I managed to capture the problem on video:

The problem started after the dealership flashed the COMAND unit following a similar (but somehow less annoying) problem: the COMAND unit (screen and all) would be dead from 1 to 4 days every few months. I am running Maps v11 2017/18 (unsure which COMAND firmware version or how to find that out).

The problem happens 80% of the time, but only when guidance is active (driving along with the map open is fine). At first I thought it was linked to whether I was streaming Bluetooth media or not but I've seen since noticed it doesn't matter.

That's worrying. Given it's pretty much impossible to know how much energy is being used for pre-heat, the only way to know for sure would be to measure the charge process and work out exactly how much energy it has received to charge. You could get one of these:

Power Consumption Meter Energy Monitor KWH Calculator Usage Plug In Electricity | eBay

Only £10, plug in and charge with the 'brick' and get a reasonably accurate direct reading of battery capacity from when you start charging to what it calls full. Assuming a starting point of about 20%, you'd expect it to take close to 6kWh to reach full (5.1 being 80% of 6.4kWh + overheads), although that does depend a lot on how much it takes for battery cooling (or heating) during the charge process. If it took a lot less than that I'd say you've got good evidence for a warranty claim myself.

Our POD Points at work used to show mine pulling around 4.9kWh for a full charge from around 12%. If you could get it down to 0% which is of course near impossible guess it would pull like 5.5....never pulls the full 6.2, this is normal for EV's and PHEV's.

Nowadays it seems to only pull around 3.7kWh....i've been in discussions with the dealer for months over this. I now have an electrical chemical smell after charging, this is after over 1200 charges.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it’s worth charging your 350e into any charge stations away from home? And if so, are there any preferred suppliers, or do they all charge a similar tariff and it’s more about which ones youre most likely to use in your particular area? And finally, do most have them need membership (ecoctticity, polar, CYC, etc) and if so how are you billed? All appears different and very confusing. Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

If the point is free or with a connection charge of £1 (through app) or so then I think it's worth it. I always like hunting down a free charge :)

Mmmm, it’s working fine this morning. I’ll blame the back end services for this as nothing has changed with the car, location or phone.

Mine has stopped reporting the location of the vehicle, it came back today but seems to have gone again, all week it showed me at the swimming pool where I parked to take the kids to their lessons, but GPS works and other Connect functions work....

I did take it back, not long after getting it. I’ve concluded it’s fine, just that I don’t care for the noise, having been running nice sounding engines for quite some time now.

Normal driving with the windows closed, no complaint really, often no clue if it’s on ICE or E power other than the Rev counter. Just cold start with open windows or worse, standing next to it - just doesn’t sound ‘premium’.

The c350e ICE is a bit noisier than the C200 isn't it? I think there is less room for as much insulation. I find in the cabin it's pretty quiet, except when pushing in Sport/Sport +

I have found if you drive down a alley type environment with walls either side and windows down it does sound quite clattery on startup while moving but nowhere near the c class diesels.

That's a fair description I'd say. My 'issue' is simply that I don't think the noise fits with the image and price tag. I'd expect a 4 pot diesel to be a bit noisy, but not a modern 4 pot petrol.

That's good information - thank you. I suspect that the 0% and 100% numbers displayed are actually more like 10% and 90% actual battery charge state. As you say, perfectly normal for EV/PHEV. When I was looking at the 330e, the BMW guy said right up front that the usable charge was somewhere in that region. 85% of 6.2kWh would be 5kWh, which is close to the numbers you saw. It would be nice to have a definitive statement of the actual numbers, but that wouldn't play well would it.

3.7kWh does suggest an issue doesn't it. That's only giving about 75% of an assumed 5kWh usable. Has to be worth kicking up about. What sort of EV miles is that giving you?

It's generally OK to good, but certainly not totally reliable is it.

I used to always see 14 miles estimated pretty much after a charge, nowadays it's 10 or 11 and drops to 9 quite quickly (on a cold day, it's at 9 miles at 98% chwrge!)

It's so difficult to say how far that gets me because of regents and traffic conditions but it's definitely dropped since the first summer where my best runs on my 19.5 mile com where 17 miles engine off, I'd regularly arrive with 99.9mpg on display nowadays it's more often in the 60's which isn't bad but is a big drop. I'm curious to see how it increases in spring, this will likely be my last summer with this car (leased).

That does seem to square with the numbers doesn't it. The figures coupled with the malodorous emission following charge do suggest a problem with battery pack or charger don't they. I bet they won't be keen on swapping a battery pack if they can avoid it though. The EV component warranty doesn't specify an actual capacity guarantee, only if it 'fails', and explicitly excludes wear & tear. I wonder if they would try to argue that 25% drop-off in capacity after such a short time is 'wear and tear'? Good luck anyway, and please do keep us posted on your progress.

I always knew it would be a difficult fight but somehow this smell seems to suggest I might have a better chance.

Our MD got Volvo to replace the entire battery pack on his XC90 but it was much newer and had more serious issues, even that he had to fight for....but hard to be surprised given the costs involved.

I'd quite like them to offer me a complete vehicle replacement as I don't need the estate anymore :D ;)

Oh also...I'm on my 2nd home charger, first one developed a wiring fault and now this one is too but they're having trouble getting the replacement in due to it being changed....hopefully to a design that is less prone to wiring fatigue....

The car went in overnight and had the system "reset". I don't know exactly what was involved but it seems to have solved the problem so far and I've had no issues since.

Anyone else having trouble with app-activated pre-entry climate control at the moment? Not working for me the last few times I tried. Also tried the web portal with the same result. Works fine locally, but that somewhat defeats the object.
Mine is normally fine but for the last 2-3weeks I keep getting a message saying that my request has been cancelled. I try multiple times with the same result. However, sometimes when I check later the system shows as recently updated and the pre-entry time has been logged!

Three pre-conditioning failures this morning, following an earlier success. My first web app issues for a long time. This time, I’m wondering if the failures were due to the car already being pre-conditioned at the time I’m trying to set a later departure time...

....and mine was fine again today! It’s just a bit flakey isn’t it.

My car is booked in for a week Monday, told them they can keep it all week as I am away on business by train.

It now stinks inside, all the time, chemical, electrical, battery melting kind of smell....even now i'm not charging and putting up with mid-30's mpg. Can't stop it from using the batteries a bit when driving of course but i'm not doing a lot over the next week.

Oh and on full right lock the tyre has started catching the inside coverings of the wheel arch.

All in all, no longer a happy owner, i'm quite resilient but the issues are becoming too big for me to shrug off.

Ultimately the car can't handle being charged over 1000 times and the 3-pin charge back isn't built well enough for daily use.

That’s not good :(

Please keep us updated when you get some news.

Sounds like you’re better off away from it right now. [emoji45]

I had a rubbing noise in right full lock this morning. Going to have to check whether the tyre is rubbing on mine as well. The hat would be crazy.

I haven’t used the 3-pin charger since it fell apart in my hands last year. It took MB months to give me a replacement (without admitting it was under warranty). I had a proper charging point fitted, which has been fine.

I hope they’ve made progress by the time you’re back. Good luck.

So only had my 350e a week, and been away most of that time so not driven it much. Trying to get to grips with all the bits and bobs... Anyone know if the mercedes parking app should work? I have the keyless go option. I have the app on my iphone but it tells me i need to connect new device under vehicle -> remote parking assist on the command. I connected my phone as a hot spot and can see some apps etc but not parking one. Do I need to pay extra for that?
Cheers

I think the app is called Remote Parking. I’ve seen video, but never live action...
