Ref gearboxes on these... Im afraid I cant agree that there isnt an issue.

I remember back in 2003 I was looking to buy one.. at this point they were only a few years old. Almost every single one I looked at with over 50-60K miles had major transmission work. They definately had issues - every MB tech/transmission specialist you spoke to would confirm...

It put me off and I went and bought a CLK320 Cabrio instead.

As they are getting older, of course receipts for this work may be lost and so newer owners may not know what has been done to the car.
Also almost every one I have sold through Mercland has also had evidence of major gearbox overhauls.

My view at the time was that the new owners must have been testing these cars to their limits, burning the transmission oil and maybe the gearbox wasnt quite strong enough for that abuse.

However at this age, if its ok, its likely to be ok as long as you keep it serviced.

SHude, dont want to be disrespectval but the comment any bodyshop should sort MB rust problems makes me think, and with members on here having had nitemares with work carried out by your so called bodyshop about it returning most hast :eek:
I say "any bodyshop" because it's standard steel panels as you'd find on any car. It's not made of aluminium, carbon fibre or a Fullerine-mesh or something exotic.

Not mine! :eek: That was in lovely nick.. I miss that car. I wonder if it's still getting coked up pootling around the Channel Islands?

Cheers,

Mine had a refurb box fitted around 120K, before I bought it.

W202 rust - bootlid hole (especially if parked on a hill, nose down), wings, rear arches around the bumper, doors behind rub strips, sills :thumb:

Brakes are expensive, check the discs (especially front)

Remove the undertray and look at the damper pulley front and centre of the sump - mine has issues, as Ollie will attest

I love mine and wouldn't change it for the world*. Especially now it's running a nice big auspuff pipe :D

Has now done 157K and still feels like it's 3 years old.

* where world = SL65 or 600bhp E55:D
