There's a lot to be said for old school security measures such as a steering lock.
Never going to stop a determined thief but can be enough to make them choose something else.

It amazes me how many people don't put the alarm on when going to bed.

To the OP; horrible story.

To your post; glad my wife has recently started to make sure we put the alarm on at night. I'd never considered it before TBH but evidently a good idea.

Better to have a system that lets them get a certain distance away , then disables the car as if it has broken down ( fuel shut off or similar) . Just far enough away that they won’t come back .

Even better if you could remotely lock them in and fill the car with Zyklon B .
