Hi all,

Could you please help me with a query?

I had my C43 serviced (B) by Mercedes about a month ago (£720!).

Ever since, the car has intermittently "died" upon braking to a stop at traffic lights.

1: Having had it towed to Merc after the 3rd occurence and it not restarting, I have been told that this is due to a faulty crank sensor and that this will cost £340! I am trying to get this done on warranty, but does this sound valid?

2: Also, this only happened after the service, and has never happened before - coincidence?

amny thanks for any responses

The CPS sensor cost £47 from Bosch and takes 15 to 20 mins to fit

Its a common fault and its only held in with on screw

Details can be provided

Malcolm is correct, i changed mine abt a year ago, its a 10 min job max.

It is the sensor that is used foe the timing set up on the engine, the pulse from the sensor tell the ECU where the crankshaft is

Whats the CPS Sensor

Crank position signal/sensor? just guessing...

Yes, sounds like the right diagnosis, same happened to me several times, once on a dual carriageway at speed! bit scary.

Not sure off top on my head but I recall mine being around £300 too, so you are not getting 'overcharged'.

What £47 and 10-20 mins max

When your car keeps on cutting out in the most dangerous way just getting to the dealership is a relief and so yes £300 is not cheap but I was happy to spend that to get it fixed once they had it. I am not the most engine savvy person I know, so horses for courses.

Overcharged was referring to dealership standards.

Yes and sorry, I eccept that, I am just a tight old bugger:mad::mad:

£600 an hour  ..... i knew MB dealers were expensive , but not that much !! ;)

I had the same problem on my C43. Managed to limp home, phoned MobiloLife to see if they'd recover it to the garage for me. They said yes, but before they did that they'd send a tech out to look at it at my place.

Guy turns up in a Sprinter full of spares and all the diagnostic kit, spends an hour fiddling with it. He recommended changing the crank sensor, that cured the problem completely. And the best bit? I got charged £56 for the part and *nothing* for the labour.

Now your car's at the garage you'll probably have to cough up what they ask (does seem an awful lot to me though), but bear MobiloLife in mind if anything goes wrong in future - assuming you've got full MBSH, of course. People have had mixed experiences with the service, but for me it was brilliant.

Cheers,

Gaz

I got talking to a nice lady (i was chatting her up) at MB who was waiting for her 202 car, "that will be £358 madam and we have tested it" "its the CPS" She rings me now and asks things

if I remember when mine went and maybe Mr Collins will be able to tell me as he has all the paperwork mine cost in the region of £120, gotta love Mr Purslow!!

Update - having called a specialist who said they would do the work for £150, and being told by Merc that it would cost £380, i argued them down to £230, simply becuase as stated by other posters I didnt want the "russian roulette" of trying to get it to the other garage. Eventually they relented.

It is interesting to note that none of the work needed for my "B" service (£800 total) nor this CPS affair ((£230) was covered by my extended Tier 2 warranty. Needless to say, I won't be renewing that particular item!!!

Thanks to all for your words of wisdom

You're right Gaz, in that Mobilolife were great once they validated I had a FMBSH. However as it was a Sunday, they could only send an "Agent" who could only tow the car home. If only a proper technician had turned up I'd be more flush! ;-)

I had the same problem with my C43 so I changed the CPS myself - easily done with a socket set that has extensions and a universal joint.

Part was about £ 50 from MB (stock item) and took 10-15 minutes to do. I could save saved a bit more and sourced directly from Bosch but I wanted to be mobile again.
