Got the car serviced last weekend, all was good but noticed there was a very slight blow in my exhaust when it was up on the ramps. Its at the joint between the centre muffler and pipe.
I've always loved the noise of the car but found it too quiet, so just been wondering how loud would it become with a straight pipe and no middle muffler?
I don't want anything antisocial loud, but a few more decibels wouldn't go amiss

Very loud. You would be better off stripping the muffler of its innards and re welding it.

I don't think it will be that bad actually.

How many Cats do you have? (not talking pussy's either) :)

Got all the cats still fitted, the exhaust is standard.

It wont be audible at all from the inside of the car (unless you floor it), but when your outside it will be loud enough to hear and be VERY raw. ie. absolutely beautiful.

Here's a C43 with silencer and 2 cats removed (which is more extreme then what you will do to yours):

Yep 4 cats, don't really want to lose those as I guess that will fail me on emissions for the MOT.

Thanks for the vid Adam, sounds rather good!

Cjab, if you remove 2 of those cats (1 from each side) you will still pass the MOT. But i wouldn't take them out incase another one in the same line of cats fails.

You will enjoy taking off the silencer though, i know i do and my engine has half the number of cylinders.

Taking out two of the cats (centre) will actually improve power a little and make it sound a little deeper.

Quite a few members have done this for similar reasons, and generally the increase in noise is relatively slight. M-B rear boxes (even AMG ones) are quite heavily baffled and the centre muffler doesn't normally do a huge amount.

I was certainly pleased with the result on my R129, if anything I'd still like it a little louder :o

Remember this is a declarable modification as far as insurance goes, so you might want to check what the impact on premium/excess is going to be if you go ahead.

Really usefull post- amazing amount of info. in such a short time, always wondered whether it's worth modding mine, I just might try it now!!:thumb:

I had the mod done by Longlife Exhausts in Wallington (fabricate & fit stainless steel 'Y' section to replace centre muffler) - £129 and done in about 90 mins while I waited.

Thanks for all the info!
I'll make enquiries then on getting a stainless section fitted.:thumb:

Insurance is due for renewal in May, so while I'm getting quotes from the brokers I'll mention it to them and see how this will affect the premium.

It sounds absolutely fine, its just a bit raw because theres no muffler to manufacture a more smoother sound.

I assume the Y would have to be removed for the Mot and re-instal the original setup??

No, why do you think that?

It's replacing the centre muffler (which has two inlets ... one from each side of the V8 ... and a single outlet) with a Y shaped section of stainless steel pipe.

The cats and rear silencer are untouched.

The exhausts sounds great, but the engine has an accompanying whine, which may be the compressor or something else belt driven?

Oh that. Yes that could be a belt whine. Most mercs do this on start-up, quite common.

Oh, I stand corrected, I'l have to go and have a look at my setup.
