I am pretty sure my C43 is down on power and generally not performing as it should – it doesn’t accelerate as well as I think it should, seems to get confused on kickdown and also hesitates between 3000 & 4000 rpm when accelerating. When I had it serviced recently (60000 mile) it was showing a fault code for the MAS/MAF, and that together with the symptoms I’ve read about on here would seem to point to it being the MAS that’s at fault. I don’t think it’s just familiarity, as I’ve found myself stranded on the wrong side of the road a few times when trying to overtake much less powerful cars, having previously been able to sail past.

However, it flew through its MOT today, and my friendly local (non-merc specialist) mobile mechanic who took it there for me said that the emissions wouldn’t be correct if the MAS had gone, yet it had great results on the emissions test.

Before I shell out £80 on ebay for a replacement (which I can ill afford atm), can anyone shed any light on this, or suggest other possible causes of the aforementioned symptoms ?

Many Thanks

Ian

Have you got a standard or 'performance' eg K&N air filter ?

Hi Howard, it's standard. Was replaced at recent service, by which time I'd already started suspecting something was wrong.

hi Ian,

Mine was really sluggish when i first bought mine, still passed the MOT with a dodgy MAS.

I agree it is a punt at spending £80, but then a dealer will charge £50 to put it on star diags anyway!, unless you can get an indi to check it?

Thanks Alps, could be then that my mechanic was talking out of his a*se. So could well still be the MAS then, even though it got good results on the emissions.

It was Andy Gayle who serviced it and told me that having put it on the diagnostic computer, that the MAS was showing faults, but Andy said that in his opinion it was still driving OK and wasn't showing the normal symptoms of failed MAS.

Guess I'll be spending the money on ebay then - which I know will be worth it if it gives me back the power. At least I don't have to pay dealer prices, approx £240 IIRC.

Cheers

Ian
