I have an in dash message that says to top up with one litre of oil...

In the service book though there is some conflicting advice as to which viscosity of oil to use. In a handwritten note on the inside cover it says Mobil15W30 but in the service entries themselves it refers to Mobil10w40. Does it matter which one I use? Are there any alternatives or should I stick to the MB recommended brand?

Thanks!

Sorry - should have made myself clearer: it's Mobil One 5W30 and Mobil One 0w40.

I did check the handbook, but there was no mention of which oil to use.

I'll probably ring my local dealer but this time of the day they're always busy...

If they serviced it with 0W40 then I'd stick that in, best not to mix different grade oils.

I had the same issue, needed to top my CLK55 AMG up a little. Decided I didn't trust what was written in the book and just changed the lot. Its so simple on the 5.5 V8 to change the oil and filter. Bought a cheap fluid pump from ebay and sucked the existing oil out through the dipstick tube and then refilled with Fuchs Titan 10W/40 semi synthetic from

That way I am 100% confident when the oil was changed, what the quality is and what to top it up with if it needs more and all for less than £50 and half an hours effort

0w-40 is the best kind for most mercs, your car will turn over easily in the winter and the oil will be more than viscous enough at engine running temps.
