C55 Estate

Subaru Forester STi

I'm sure I remember seeing this for sale back last year [at the same time that timk, on here, was selling his import]. It was then obviously bought by the chap who is selling it now.

Could be a good buy. A low-mile estate, for under £10k. Seem the difficult parts have been looked at to - replacing the 'stereo' and Jap rear number-plate plinth.

Think I might have to drop the guy a call to get more info [the services history for instance].

I'd have to lose the yellow calipers though!

Looks tidy, Personally black is not for me. I agree the yellow calipers would be first to go along with the V8 badge on the wings and I do not like rear tints as I think it 'snaps' the car in half (...just me then ?) and the C55 comes stock with the nice blue tinted glass all around.

This one does not have the 'flappy paddles' of the later model ,you won't miss them , but kits are available if you want to retro fit them.

It will be rust free and might need a gearbox ATF service if there is no record of it being done. Getting hold of a low mileage 'clean' UK registered C55 estate is difficult , this offers a solution for a good price. It is also in the lower VED range because of it's age

I have had mine for a few years now and is my daily driver, I am happy with it.

It was also for sale January time too, Looks lovely!

Pete, I'm with you on dark tints on a black car. Each to his own, but they, along with the yellow calipers and the extra V8 badges, look a bit Halfords/Ebay tat to me too.

That first UK service, from the cost, might well have included an ATF change.

I'm an E-class man really, but if that was Tanzanite, I could even be tempted; the tat could easily be sorted.

I thought those side badges looked wrong! I'm not sure if the calipers, badges and tints were done in Japan or by the first owner over here. I'll ask the current owner if he knows.

One question I'd definitely ask is if the car had been undersealed. It's now been in the UK for two winters...fingers crossed it would still be rust free? I also noticed the pics are obviously on the coast. If the current owners lives literally right there, more chance of rust?!

Think I would add paddles, like the owner of this 2004 car - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classi...y New&onesearchad=Used&sort=price-desc&page=1

Well if you want one this has to be the best around at the moment and the price is not bad either, interesting that Gavin says it was for sale in January,I would have thought this would have sold quick.

Its unlikely any rust would have taken hold on the bodywork in just two winters, the rust beginning to show on my (once £50K) car has little to do with road salt and more to do with poor build/body prep quality. The yr 2000 Vauxhaull Astra that was in our family from new and left us a few years ago at over a 100K UK road miles had never seen the inside of a warm garage and never been polished properly once in its 17 years with us did not have a single spot of rust on the body. But I digress.

Any C55 with +/-buttons on the front of the steering wheel will not have had paddles as standard. The late models like mine built July 2006 have paddles but no buttons, and unfortunately attract the higher VED.

I hope it doesn’t sell quick now, as I need to sell my current car before I’m ready to look for it’s replacement...which I’m not planning to do until lockdown is pretty much over.

Can’t decide if a C55 is the way to go though, or push the boat out and get an E/CLS55 and all the potential extra costs of running one?!

I decided to buy an AMG on a whim and did not need anything the size of an E class (I didn't really need another car at all) , I did (compared to others on here) the equivalent of 10 minutes of research and decided to go for a simple version that I liked the look of....C class estate.

I had no Idea that the C55 wagon was as rare as it is but what I did find out during my 'extensive' research is that it is about as analogue as you can get in this company. No SBC/ABC/XYZ/LGBT etc, no 'door closing assist' etc etc , a tried and trusted simple SOHC (chain driven) activating 3 valves per cylinder with 2 spark plugs per cylinder.

Adding to that it only makes around 350 odd BHP from a M113 5.4 V8 engine linked to a proven transmission unit rated at double the torque output that it is being served, I figured it must be a pretty under stressed power-train.

So at this point I started my extensive 6 month search for the perfect example making sure funds were in place so I could pounce when the perfect example popped up....not quite.

Bear with me. For years ALL of my work has been outside the UK , only the very odd work day or two in country so I had no need or desire to own a 'nice' car and in between being taxied/chauffeured to the airport or taking the train to Brussels and picking up a hire car my UK form of transport was a X reg Opel Astra that had been in our family from new.

That changed when I landed a local UK contract that just kept getting extended , the young (car mad) lads at work would take the pi$$ out of me with comments like " Bloody contractor on a million pounds an hour and driving his mom's" car etc etc , all lighthearted stuff.

One of the car lads asked what I liked the look of and I mentioned MB used to make a small estate car with a big V8 in it, I wonder what they are like? Within minutes using the power of smart phones and those blurred fingers the yoof seem to have when using them he had found one for sale at a dealers........15 miles away from where I was working and half way between work and my home !

Long story (a bit) short , I looked at it on the way home , test drove it the next day and bought it, my first Mercedes Benz . If it had been 30 miles North or meant taking a day off to see one 200 miles away I would not have bothered and I would not now be on a MB forum boring you all to death.

I did not even know than Comand and parking sensors were an option on the C55, (mine lack's both) , I had no idea that earlier models are half as cheap when it comes to VED ,thats how little research I did.

Do I regret it ? No , the car is my daily driver (although the little family Toyota Yaris is being use more during lock down) And for it's age and mileage the running cost's are acceptable, the beginning of the rust issue is more annoying (because it should NOT happen on a premium car this young) but I will make my mind up on that at a later date.

Pound for pound you can not get into a more simple 'real' AMG to drive every day. What really worked for me is that I did not test drive any other V8 AMG cars and have not driven any other one since, Had I taken a supercharged E class or a C 63 for a test drive things might have been different...

Bug4life...just buy it....:thumb:

I'm lucky in that I have both a c55 estate and an e55 estate. The c55 is great but the e55 is hands down the better car. Better built, specced, better ride and obviously quicker. Since they are about the same price, as long as you don't mind the extra size, I'd have the e class.
But for a daily the c55 is great. A bit smaller, a bit nimbler, about 10% better fuel consumption. It does without the trick, read expensive, bits on the e class, sbc, airmatic etc but it is still quite easy to get a good bill from it. There was a chap on PH who spent loads on his. The e class is better for longer, loaded trips and the 7 seat option has its uses as we have small rugrats.
Ours is my wife's daily so I don't drive it that much so it's a nice change when I do.

Petrol Pete - if I could, I probably would...I need to sell my current car first though, which I'm not going to try to do until lockdown if over.

I think for me, it'll come down to what's available at the time I'm ready to buy. I do like the idea of the additional interior space of the E though, as long as I can fit it in my single garage!

That's a reasonable view. I went to see our e55 and decided I wanted an e55 but not necessarily that one but the chap did a deal, it passed an inspection and it's been a great car.
I wasn't looking for a c55 but one came up and again it seemed (as it has been) a decent car. It's always the way that if you are looking for something specific then you can't find one but it you leave the options a bit more open you tend to get a bit more choice
I don't really like silver cars but now we have 2!

The W203 C55 is a great bet, very little to go wrong but the offset to that against say an E55K is that - although no slouch - they’re quite slow by modern standards and a decent 6cyl diesel will give it a run for its money; there’s not a great deal of flexibility to time being a N/A either.

I've got a CLS55 on the list too [might as well] - but I believe they are wider and longer than even an E55 estate, so not sure if I'm pushing it with regards to fitting in my single garage?!

Unless you have a door or recess in the Right place then a CLS55 (or E55) may be a little too cosy in a standard single garage.

When lockdown is over, I'm going to ask my brother-in-law to bring his S212 E-Class over, to see if that fits!

I think width will be ok, as I have a ton of spare space with my Forester parked inside. Length is a concern as I have a self at the back...I still measured [just] over 5m of available length though!!
