C63 LSD Question

Hi guys,

Just had my car serviced at my local independent and amongst other things I asked him to check the rear LSD oil level. Although my car doesn't have an LSD on the build sheet I jacked up the rear a while back and on spinning one of the rear wheels the other span the same way. I believe this means it has an LSD.
So the garage get back to me and although it has an LSD it doesn't appear to be a full "bells and whistles" that comes on the performance pack cars with the usual high grade oil in and doesn't need doing?? Having bought the car second hand I am assuming the previous owner had an after market version fitted. I use this Merc specialist a lot and they have a good reputation but that didn't make much sense to me. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Cheers.

I thought an LSD was an LSD and a standard diff allowed only one wheel to spin

Maybe it has a Quaife diff......which is a bonus as its superior to the OEM one

Prob got a quaife in there. I'm surprised the previous owner didn't advertise the car as such, that's a massive plus point for a buyer.

You know the best way to find out... Do an emergency start and see if you get a 1 or 11. :-).

In response to your original query, quaife atb's don't need any servicing over the standard cars service schedule.

Yes, looks as though you have a Quaife in there. Fantastic LSDs, much better than the OEM clutch based one.

Thanks for all the info chaps. Not being clutch based would explain the "bells and whistles" comment.

So is an oil change not required with these then?

yeah although for me that's a little confusing as the quaife is much better which would normally be associated with the phrase bells and whistles. Perhaps the guy is assuming that because it's aftermarket it's not as good as an MB product.

I thought a Quaife behaved like a standard open differential when there was zero grip on one/both of the wheels. Consequently, shouldn't the other wheel have rotated in the opposite direction?

Nope, tested mine a couple of weeks ago while it was on a ramp. Turned the right wheel forwards and the left went with it.
