I couldnt find a post that takes this angle, so apols if there is one.
But my question here is ONLY about the engine, not the body/year.

I am fortunate to have a bonus to buy a C63, at last.
In the UK, 25k-35k will get a reasonable 204/6.2 or a 205/4.0 twinturbo.

So your thoughts, please, for EACH of these, pro M156 or pro M177 (or =) for:

Reliability (including transmission)
Cost of parts if needed
Stock performance
Perf pack/507 vs M177
Response
Docility/Tractability
Sound (maybe theres an amazing exhaust kit for the M177??)

and perhaps most important
Which would have the better collector value in 10years time (your view)

Hopefully you can help me spend wisely.
Many thanks.
J.

Reliability (including transmission) - both good, M177 edges it
Cost of parts if needed - swings and roundabouts
Stock performance - M177
Perf pack/507 vs M177 - in which respect?
Response - M156
Docility/Tractability - M156
Sound (maybe theres an amazing exhaust kit for the M177??) - M156

and perhaps most important

Have you driven both? If not, then you need to. Also don’t think of either as investment, they’ll cost you much more to maintain than the you’ll ever get back, especially after accounting for inflation

For track focus, M156 is a hammer, bit of a holly ghost fire. It keeps going, and it goes and just keeps going like it never wants to stop. It will eat bumpers from a Porsche 911 turbo, you can scare the living lights out of them, especially around the apex, the smoke from the rear tyre and the fire spitting flame is amazing to see on playback. You feel 10 years younger and if you enjoy going to theme park with the kids, then m156 ticks the box. I have no experience of the 4.0l, but my friends will chime in and tell you all the great things 🙂

Love this video, it's the holly ghost fire 🙂

Very different cars....IMO. No right answer as to which is best (engine or car)....which ever one you like best....is the best, at least for you. Very different feels to them both. I love the M156 sound and feel.....but would I buy one? probably not....the high torque feel of the 4.0TT (or even the 157...never fitted to a C) is more what I like from an engine.

As much as i like a 204 C63....there is no getting away from it being pretty old tech now, more the car than the engine.....the 204 was launched in 2007....17 years ago.....and is the old style interior your sort of thing (i like them) or do you like the modern gadgets and look of a 205?....as I said....no right/wrong answer!!

Have you driven either model?

And that, too, was twelve years ago...

And almost as rare as hen's teeth, and at least four or five times the OP's budget now, even if you can find one for sale. Get real, Slim..

Neither, thanks; wrong engine. Now if they'd put a more modern engine in, like the M157 or 177...

I still wouldn't spend that much of the kids' inheritance on any car...

You blew £12k fixing a m157......

Goodnight fatty.

If it had been an M156 I'd have binned it; too old a design to be worth fixing... :D

So long Slim.

Depends on body style. A coupe c63s 205 is going to outperform a 507 edirion. A 507 edition c63 is going to cost a lot for the car, more than 25k i reckon , you're paying a lot. Would I buy a 507 edition c63 when I can get a w213 E63s estate for the same price ? Id hold off , bank another bonus and spend 45k for a 40k mile e63s 4.0l.

Incidentally I'm currently going through a convertible phase, look at 5.4l supercharged SL55 or 6.2l sl63 if 2 seats are enough. Prices more like 18k to 25k ... imagine how that exhaust would sing with the top down...

In my youthful days, I used to think the same until I got an estate with a lump. Always thought they were only good for ferrying dogs or taking dead bodies to the cemetery. I was totally wrong, i would not hesitate to jump back. Its cool dude 😎
