Hi,

I know this has been discussed here before and a couple of people have commented on wear rates of the rears of C63s, so I thought I'd start a thread about my experiences.

Car is 2010 C63 Estate. Purchesed new 22nd March 2010. Delivery miles = 15.

Unfortunately I didn't record the tread depth at new, but I have added the front depths as they currently stand to get a comparison.

Mileage this morning, 6th April 2010 = 1152mi

Rear O/S
Outer - 6.5mm
Middle - 7.0mm
Inner - 6.5mm

Rear N/S
Outer - 6.1mm
Middle - 6.5mm
Inner - 6.3mm

Front O/S
Outer - 7.5mm
Middle - 7.2mm
Inner - 6.7mm

Front N/S
Outer - 7.4mm
Middle - 7.5mm
Inner - 6.9mm

I'll try and keep this updated every 1000 miles or so.

Jack

Your tyres likely started at around 8mm give or take a few microns!

Therefore, taking the average rear tyre depth at just over 1100 miles of around 6.5mm, you are getting around 730 miles out of 1mm of tyre.

This means by the time you get to 1.6mm (and therefore used approx 6.4mm of tyres) you will have done about 4700 miles - this is slightly more than I achieved from my last set and in line with what most people seem to be experiencing.

I am a little worried about these figures - havent measured mine

Jack where did you get the machine to be able to measure tyre depth?

Palmball i know you want some info on my experience picking up from Germany - have you got anymore info on when you will pick it up?

How is the leather dash going?

cheers

I have not looked at mine recently, of the principly out of sight, out of mind.

But 5000miles means the tyres are soft.

I won't be replacing like for like. I will try a different tyre to see if I can get more mileage out of it. It would suit me if they lasted till service time.

Oh yeah, what type have you got and make sure the pressures are right. its about 41 and 42 or something.

Hello mate - yes, I'd love to know what the experience was like.

I stuck up another thread a week or so ago about the delivery date - the leather dash does indeed add up to another 8 weeks to an order AFTER the car is produced and MB HQ kindly told me that my dealer should have informed me when I ordered the car. As we all now, they didn't - even when I queried this specific detail with them

Anyway, after I kicked up a bit of a fuss they have managed to sort a collection date for hopefully the 26th April :D as long as the car is back at the collection centre for the 19th which is what the 'computer' currently says! Let's hope the computer doesn't say no...as I've already booked the week off work so I can enjoy my new car! Oh, and my dealer have agreed to pay the increase in tax for me which is jolly nice of them. :)

But 5000miles means the tyres are soft.

Or the matter of over 440lb/ft of torque being channelled through them!

As with any car really, the wear rates will totally vary dependant on how the car is driven.

If you drove the car like a nun, they wouldn't/shouldn't wear any more quickly than a C180.

If you cane it at every opportunity, traction control flashing away, traffic light GPs, hard braking and high speed cornering/roundabouts etc then they'll wear out in no time :o

I'm not a saint (and I'm not saying that anyone on here is claiming to be!), but it's pretty simple to me :thumb:

Make use of the 440ft/lb regularly and expect the tyres to shred

Actually the LSD and the fact that the rubber needs to be higher grip to cope with the power both negate this, and I'm sure there's other factors too.

450bhp or whatever they are = 5k mile tyre length. I can see this is a common 'complaint' around here but really, what did you expect? 9K? 12k?

My friend's XJR - about the same weight, give or take, and less power; 4.5K from a set of rears. Friend who had a 308 a while back used to get 3K all year long.

Get a CostCo card, buy some Michelins and enjoy the soundtrack :thumb:

Didn't think the C63 came with an LSD, unless you pay extra and specify the 'performance pack'? Obviously won't affect front tyre wear though ;)

My C180 comment is obviously a bit 'tongue in cheek', the C63 only makes 450bhp or whatever at full throttle. I am no saint as I've already said, but if I'm using full throttle or even close in a 450bhp / 440ft/lb car the tyres are going to take a shredding :o :D

Ha. Years ago I has a mini cooper s, the original one. Rear tyres lasted forever.

Fronts 2000 miles if you were lucky. And none of this 18" rubbish, 10" was plenty in those days.

I got 9000 out some contis on a car with 259bhp/tonne.

This car has around 263bhp/tonne. I would expect to get the same. Therefore these tyres are softer. So a different make will be tried to see if they can last.

I would think tyre wear is proportional to the amount of fun your having.

Saying that my brother doing 60K miles a year if (and he would love) to do this many miles in a C63 he would be visting a tyre garage just over once a month....

yikes....

Saying that years and years ago I had a 205Gti Front wheel drive and then Minis with Yokohama A008's sort of slicks....but road legal. You would only get 5K out of them having fun :)

Doesn't sound bad to me either, I have been known to get <10k from my 270cdi!

Ok mine isn't an AMG but is pretty torquey -- this is my tyre wear
Original tyres Contis
axle, mileage , tyres bought
2 rears @15000 Continentals
2 fronts @ 24000 Continentals
2 rears @ 30000 Continentals
2 rears @ 45000 Goodyear
2 fronts @ 52000 Goodyear
2 rears @ 58500 Michelins

I think I would too :thumb:

...and that's why you never buy a press car...

As a personal comparison:

RS4 (B7) - 12-14,000 miles and needed a full set of 4 - Pirelli PZero
Cayman S - Rears last 12-14,000 miles including 3-4 trackdays - Michelin Pilot Sport2 N3
Fronts last 18-20,000 miles including 3-4 trackdays - Michelin Pilot Sport2 N3
Mk2 Focus RS - Fronts 6,000 miles - Continentals

I'm using a Mitutoyo micrometer to measure tread depths.

Current tyres are: ContiSportContact 5P

I had 9000 miles out of my Pirelli PZeros on rear of the 599, and recon I could have got 14k out of the fronts, but I may have killed them after a bit of hard driving

Think I got my money's worth though, I can just make out the canvas! ;)

Right. proper update.

3217miles.

2.8mm on rear, measured at tyre place.
5.9 and 6mm on front.

Current tyres Pirelli p zero. Rears fitted and balanced each £191. Michelin pilot sport £210 (pilot sport 2, £230). Dunlop something or others £178.

So, why would I buy Pirelli ?

Got a few weeks before I make the switch to a different tyre. Lets say at 4000miles.
