Car was in for air con repair today and they picked up that the cat has a hole in it and engine oil leak at rear of engine. W204 c63 with 45k miles.

questions are-

1. can the cat be welded or repaired?
2. If not can just the cat be replaced or am I looking at a new exhaust system? (Hopefully not!!)
3. Prior to last oil change the sump plug had a leak but has since been replaced, could the oil be from that previous sump plug leak? Wasnt cleaned up particularly after the last oil change.
4. if not, has anyone had similar oil leak and if so any pointers as to what it could be?

The cat should be able to be welded depending on how big the hole is. I had a secondary cat rewelded when the seam split on my previous MB.
Take it to a decent exhaust fabricator (not KwikFit and the like).

Maybe the fibre washer is leaking on the sump drain plug?
Oil leaks from the rear of the engine usually point to the main seal. Unless its a really bad leak you may want to just monitor it. I believe the fix is quite expensive. Get a Mercedes specialist to take a look and diagnose.

Edit....that can be welded.

I was hoping the cat could be welded!

Oil wise the main sump plug had a new crush washer about 6 weeks ago when it had an oil change. It’s not used a drop of oil since. So not sure if the oil leak is historic before the oil change or whether its a new one - it certainly isnt losing any oil at the mo.

Is the oil, leak at the top or bottom of the engine?

Don’t these engines have a tendency to leak from the cam cover?

The Cat can easily be welded, easy job for a decent garage.

The oil leak, I would properly clean the old oil off with brake cleaner or some decent degreaser. And then keep an eye on it to see if it returns. They should have cleaned it all off when the sump plug was replaced but I guess they didn't?
