C63 W204 oil - 5w40?

Viscosity doesn't dictate protection .

Agreed. Though using engine oil with the appropriate viscosity for the conditions is a prerequisite for protection.

I think it's a very old fashioned way of looking at it and engines regulate their temps regardless of ambient .

A sweet spot viscosity grade for general use is 5W30 some of these 30 grades have remarkable film strengths out performing thicker grades .

One of the most harshest environments for engine oil is track days , high engine temps with high EGT's poplar choices in this country is 5W40 Fuchs Titan Race Pro S and 5W40 Millers Nanodrive CFS NT+ , both Ester racing marketed oils .

No need to go thicker anywhere , with thicker oil you get more friction and heat with hot spots as slower flowing !

The idea isn't to get 'thicker oil' running in the engine... not for healthy engines, anyway.

The idea is for the oil to maintain the correct thickness regardless of other factors (to the extent possible).

So if a 40 wt oil becomes to hot, for example, it will also become too thin to provide adequate protection.

As for the relationship between viscosity and ambient temperature being an old-fashioned way of looking at it... this may be so, though I am not aware that oil manufacturers or standards institutes have updated this table, so please do share any up-to-date information that you may have on the subject.

This is where the graph I posted came from:

This makes it very difficult to assess the data provided, where there's no context, background, or authors' notes. I love a good oil debate, and in my experience most dealerships don't have a clue unfortunately.

My question here is. I have just purchased my 507, and prior to purchase, the car had a full going over and service with plugs etc at MB. Now the invoice states - Mobil Super 3000 XE 5W 30. - 229.51. Is that the wrong oil for the W204 C63? Or have the updated/changed at some point ?

TIA

When you call ask them what oil they used first before saying anything. If they answer correctly it's probably just the desk bod typing in the wrong oil but the right one was used in practice.

I'm now finding mixed info online. Some are saying it's the correct oil. The owners manual is a waste of time in regards to oil!

You can use 0W40. I wouldn't use 30 as it's a bit thin when up to temperature. These engines run hot and need oil to stick on the valvetrain.

229.50 is the specification you need to check for, then either 5W40 or 0W40. Personally, I use 5W as it's a bit thicker when cold which helps stop all the oil draining out of the lifters etc.

Yeah that sounds about right. Thing is, if that oil is spec'd for use with the engine, MB will just say it's within spec and won't do anything about it. I'll give them a call and see what they say.

It's 229.51 they have put in, according to the invoice.

Its 229.5 5w40 in mine since new 😀 MB spec id get the 5w 30 out and tell them to use the correct oil there is a guy on here ANTHY i think and on his invoice they put diesel oil in his 😔

Like I said, there's a good chance the invoice is wrong. On the one hand you've got garage monkey who knows mechanics and on the other you've got secretary monkey who knows copy and paste.

Cars going back in on Friday for an oil change. Fair play to MB, I asked if they could confirm the oil that was put in the car. They called me back and told me that the tech has put the wrong oil in, as it should be a 5w 40.

Attention to detail!

Glad its getting sorted
Good spot on the invoice 🙂
