C63 W204 oil - 5w40?

Shell Helix (5w40 fully synthetic oil) is a known brand and reasonably priced from eurocarparts, easily available and is 229.5. If you can let me know the cost of liqui moly oil or motel oil, I will research and consider it. I change my oil every year or every 2000 miles which ever comes first. So I do need oil which is easily accessible and reasonably priced.

By the way, most engine oil comes from the same place i.e. same refinery. Mobil oil, very good oil, but you will be paying for the brand name too. That's something to bear in mind.

I do however use liqui moly additive though for my twin camshafts. 😉

On my push rod 345cu Hemi engine, is has single over head camshafts and I just use fully synthetic 5w30 Shell Helix, even cheaper. Happy days 🙂
It's your motor and obviously you will look after it how you see fit but to change the oil every 2000 miles is madness to me. How did you arrive at the 2000 mile figure out of interest?
 
Hi , I change the engine oil in my M276 ever 3000 miles or at annual service.

I use 5/40 in the car but change brand at ever service as I believe different premium brands offer different cleaning charastics.

I do a lot of low mileage driving and throw in a long distance trip occasionally to give the car a good run.

Yeap, i did, I actually changed head bolts myself to the new e14 head bolts. Completed the task on my driveway 🙂 and it was a pleasure to work on.

M156 engines had 3 types of headbolts in its life span. The earlier models like mine had the original T55's, which were slightly better than the T60 as it had more material on top of the head but then around 2010, T60's were introduced which had less material. Those were the ones to watch out for and maintenance as such, regular antifreeze changed is so important. When I change mine, I couldn't see any real issues, only 2 bolts had some light surface corrosion. 20210825_161947.jpg 20210825_121255.jpg

In my car at present it's using the Mercedes 5W40.

I have used Castrol or Shell for the following reasoning : Unfortunately I am a sucker for PR blurb and by using three established brands I feel that the benefit of each oils say anti sludge benefit , valve cleaning or any thing else re cleaning benefit is to my car's engine.

My car has covered 39,000 miles and is serviced by Mercedes on a service plan by a Audi specialist between services.

I had the differential oil changed at 30,000 and the serpentine belt is booked into be changed next week.

Most of my daily driving is of short distance drives with an occasional longer outing.
 
Which oils were rated 1st to 14th?
The article has all hard to acquire oils from amsoil, pennzoil, Quaker and some micro brands. I was amazed to find a renewable Veggie oil with additives to compete in the top 14 list with superior wear protection. Not Mobil, Motul, Idemitsu, Shell/Rotella, Liqui Molly/wurth, Castrol (British Petroleum), and Petronas (Malay oil) made it to the list of top 14 with any products. Mobil is locked with a few oils at 15th position as the best, and accordingly it is the best commercially available oil package. Idemitsu was placed at 60th something position with 0w20 series from Toyota and mazda. Motul 300v had a pathetic ranking as well. You can read the article Gaz linked and read the rest.
 
Great article Gaz, all Castrol produced car engine oils are rated the worst, along with liqui moly. Mobil is overall the best formula. The ones I use from Motul are not listed here. But the idemitsu ones are superior to motul, liqui moly and Castrol. So idemitsu is what I'm going back to.

I'm glad you like it , was both an eye opener and what I expected to a point .

Yes I expected the Castrol Edge Professional LL to test better given it's approved manufacturer oil specs as I'm fond of that spiders web showing the different oil performance profiles , but was glad to see a VW 504.00 507.00 up in 5th place , unfortunately it's an expensive one :(

So I've got to be more opened minded about oils having certain manufacturer oil specs , even lesser specs for whatever reason exceeding what it should be , but unless it's on his test list we're in the dark .

Was like you shocked to see a poor show from Motul 300V as this is a Racing Ester marketed oil the best placing being Gulf Competition . So 'ordinary' manufacturer spec oils can out perform for anti wear racing Ester marketed oils that don't seek manufacturer specification .


Nice to see the myth of viscosity vs wear rightfully destroyed and high zinc levels best kept as a maximum of 1400 ppm .

The worst thing is to believe what is printed on the packaging as it seems they are allowed to say what they want .


Magnatec , Liqui Moly etc , all marketing guff .

Quite a few Valvoline's were up there doing alright .
