Hi All,
I was wonderful if someone could help on which engine oil is best to use on my 2012 c63 w204?

The car has done 52k. I can there’s 2 types of engine oil for this car which one shall I use 0W/40 or 5W/40?
thank you in all advance

use the 5w/40, fine for the UK.
0W/40 more for harsh weather and winters.
Mercedes actual oil reference number for your car is: 229.52
If you see a seller selling this and says this is the number equivelant, then this is the right oil.
CDi can use the lower ash content oil at 229.51

Without noticing your car and engine size and if the AMG, 2x 4 litres are normally needed.
I have attached a sheet for you to look at, and any in the chart will do, so you just pick.
Lots of people somehow mange to sell genuine oil on ebay and actual MB branded oil.

Agreed.

For petrol cars, including AMG, it's actually MB229.5 (and not MB229.51 or MB229.52 - these are primarily for Diesel engines).

MB-Branded oil from an MB Dealer bought off eBay (or from the part counter with discount) is a good choice. Some AMG owners will only use Mobil1 (which at one time was also recommend by MB for use in AMG engines, though this is no longer the case).

Are you planning on DIY servicing? Or supplying your own oil to the garage carrying-out the service? Or just specifying the oil you want the garage to use? Or just topping-up....?

If carrying-out a service DIY, then it's fine for an interim oil service, though for annual scheduled services (Service Schedule A / Service Schedule B), it is worth keeping in mind that - for AMG cars specifically - lack of full dealer history, or AMG specialist history, can have a significant detrimental impact on resell value, even on a 9-years old car.

+1 for 5/40 nothing else 229.5😀

I have just bought the car and I am planning on doing an oil service myself and every 5k miles. The car has part MB service history. Missed the last 2 years of MB services (may be due to lockdown) and has barely done 6k in that time. Should I be worried?

The car is otherwise clean and bought it for a decent price due to part service history.

Would you recommend carrying out the service interval by MB despite it having part service history?

Mark do you know any MB Specialist in east London ilford?

I can recommend Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow (West London), he's not an AMG specialist as such but he certainly knows the C63.

Someone else might know someone closer to you.

There are three separate issues relating to this.

The first, is the car itself. Missed services don't necessarily mean there's an issue with the car, as always buy on condition - a close inspection will tell you if the car was well looked after or not. And, many people suffered financially during COVID and just couldn't justify spending money on servicing a car that hardly covered any mileage since the last service, so I suspect there will be other cars out there with a missed service in 2020.

The second issue is resell value - and missing services can have a significant effect on that when it comes to AMG cars. So getting the service schedule back on track will certainly help come resell time. Make sure that future services are done by either a dealer, or by an independent specialist that has access to the Mercedes-Benz Digital Service Book (DSB) so that the service history is updated on the MB central computer. That said, if you intend to keep the car for a number of years, or even 'run it to the ground ' so-to-speak, then resell value might not be an issue for you. But in this case do keep in mind that in the event of write-off or total-lose, the insurer will want to see the car's service record, and the car's 'market value' for compensation purposes will depend to some extent on that.

The third issue is the service regime going forward. You really want to close all the gaps and get back on track (regardless on who will be services it going forward). Have a read here:

You should really check when the following were last done:

Service A
Service B (inc. cabin/pollen filter)
Brake fluid change
Air filter change
Fuel filter change (in needed)
Pano roof lubrication (if fitted)
ATF and filter change
Spark plug change

Also, the MB Service Care Plan is a fantastic way of having dealer servicing on the cheap, BUT before considering it, be aware that the plan will not cover any 'catch-up' items - i.e. the dealer will only carry-out what is due on the NEXT service, and won't cover any items that are outstanding because they were missed during previous services.

If its missed the last 2 year's then it would also need plugs etc ,mine has probably done 2k over the last 2 year's and still gets serviced by MB to there exact spec every year ,

Thank you Mark for the detailed response. Will need to find a specialist to carry out the works.

I have just had a conversation with MB service department and they now state that the oil they use for all AMGs is now 0w30 ?
I'm glad I provided my own 229.5 5w40 bought from MB
