Can I get a Classic Policy if my car is parked on the street & is a convertible?

Just a quick question before phoning around...I'm looking at buying a SL500 and want to know whether I'm going to waste my time phoning around for Classic Insurance, if all they will say is 'put it in the garage'

I do have a garage, but it's full of my work kit and I can't leave that on the road!

Any thoughts...or will it be cheaper to add it to my Admiral Multi Car Policy?

Ian

You can only find out by ringing around.

If you want agreed value then almost certainly will need it to be garaged for that clause to apply.

It depends from the address,London for example is a No
As ^ just call and find out as many members here have classic policy while parked on the road

My insurance company insist my SL is garaged, even though I have a private drive behind electric gates.

I just did a very quick check on confused.com, to get an idea of insurance if going down the non classic route.

I filled in the form...obviously stating no No Claims Bonus, as this is used on my other car.

I did 2 quotes....the first parked on the road, at home, the second in my garage, which is 200 metres up the road.

The road parked quote was £100 cheaper with Admiral, who I'm currently with and cheaper with all the quotes?

That makes no sense!

I will phone up a few brokers and see what they say

Try an online quote at Lancaster

My 55 is insured on classic policy - cost is peanuts on these policies however you don't build any no-claims on them. Mine is declared as being on the private driveway albeit I'm in a low crime countryside location

My SEL is insured on a classic policy with agreed value and it's parked on the drive....

I looked at them for my SL a couple of years ago, but at that time a 'normal' policy with full no claims was cheaper. Maybe the Classic policies that cut in at 15 years old are cheaper - I will shop around again next year.

Quite possibly, I cut the insurance on the SL in half with a "classic" policy.

For my 55 £410 all in I got classic insurance for - normal insurance cheapest at that point was £875

Worth taking time out to call a few classic policy specialists indeed

The renewal for my SL is £340 this year, on a normal policy (but limited to 3000 miles a year). Still worth looking around though.

I've done a few on line quotes and it still seems cheaper to add the car to my normal Admiral Multi car Policy

This is for Fully Comp, parked on the road, age 35, no convictions, claims etc. I can't have any no claims, as that it on my everyday car. Alos said 500 miles.

I checked Lancaster and they want £1200 classic policy. Adrian Flux wanted £1100 and Footman James wont insure unless it parked in a garage.

I do have a garage, but I need to measure it, as it's just a lock up and I fear the SL wont fit in! Also, what happens if I'm away for a few days and need to park the car on the road in that location?

Confused.com for sure!!

But Classic and Sportscar magazine - its a good read - and while you are there check the insurance ads at the back.

Or just memorise them at the newstand....

Footman James

Lancaster

inter alia. Each will have different policies on what constitutes a classic car though.

Try some of the specialist insurers like Peter Best or Carole Nash .

Well....I phoned Admiral who I currently have a Multi Car policy with. (2 current vehicles).

5000 miles per year, social use, kept in street, comprehensive cover with the upgraded alloys (they wont pay out for these though)....£386.66. Not a bad quote.

If I keep it in a locked garage......about £10 more expensive! When I asked why, the girl said that they must have more claims against car parked in garages.

So....it looks like its affordable....certainly better than Classic at over £1000 from Lancaster!
