Can't log in to laptop

'Morning All!

I have a 2/3 year old 11" HP Pavilion dm1 using Windows 7 Home Premium, and it hasn't been used for a couple of months.

When I start it up and type in my password, I'm getting this message:

"The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"

This screen reverts to the opening logon page after a minute or two, but appears every time I try again. I've rebooted several times, to no avail.

I don't know if there is a work around, but I'm catching a train in a few hours, so any swift replies would be greatly appreciated to save me lugging a bigger laptop around.

Thanks in advance, and any late replies will be greatly appreciated too, more so by the laptop itself, which will meet a grizzly fate otherwise!

Edited to add: Success! I still might hurt the thing, though, it's been a pos all its life!
