Car for £1000 - ish

Forgot to mention,
My wife (who MUST ALWAYS be obeyed) is on a one person boycott of ALL French produce, so French cars are not an option:o :o

Regards
John

Can we have a "Hunt the French thing" at your GTG then? :D

Mike

That Punto looks Mint!

John, me being 6ft2 tall, I had the Clio, was no problems...if only your other half wasn't boycotting french stuff! Apart from that, I'd suggest:

Fiesta

KA (possibly)

Escort

190E

Toyota Corolla (I'd recommend this, I know a guy had one as his first car, he's still got it now 7 years later and has literally cost him pennies to run)

Lastly...Vauxhall Astra.

Shame about the anti-French rule, the smaller Peugeot's are fantastic cars, especially the diesels. My pug 306 1.9 DTurbo was rock solid for many thousands of miles (and i bought it at 123,000!!)

Oh, and im 6'2" and it wasnt a problem :)

Wouldnt advocate a Polo from personal experience, Fiesta's seem to go on forever tho :) good luck in the choice!!!

I might sneak some Brie onto the buffet table at the gtg

190E you could get a 202 for that price now... Ok it might be a bit rough around the edges but it is a first car....:D

My suggestion would be a Nissan Almera 1.4se reliable, loads of room and group 4 insurance...;)

BMW 316i Coupe (e36)?

I drive one, i'm 18 and paying around £1000 for 3rd party fire and theft insurance. Low value vehicle so not too worried about getting it damaged. Good drive, and very well built. Solid engine - mines done over 110k and it runs beautifully - good servicing needed though.

Your choice, but I would recommend it. I'm about 5'11 and the car poses no probs for me.

Hi John,
As you know I'm 6'8", I would suggest staying with Ford as being consistantly bigger on leg room and cheaper on parts/insurance. I've driver a Ka, Fiesta, Escort, Mondeo and Focus all of which had enough room for me.

I would suggest perhaps looking at an Escort as it's small enouogh to not be cumbersome to drive and yet large enough for your daughter to feel comfortable.
But Pammy is right. It depends where you are long. Im 6ft but the Ka Fiesta Escort and Focus don't have enough legroom for me. As Pammy says depends if you are all leg like me or all body like some. I have a 6ft 3in friend with a 29 inch inside leg. Mine is 33 inches. Few cars fit me. He is fine.

Polo is much roomier than many imagine. I'm with Pammy on this one. Drive em all and see which suits.

I was only coming for frogs legs and snails...won't bother then..
I will personally make sure you have a very nice plateful of English frogs legs and snails. We also have some very nice large brown slippery slimey slugs which will fill a plate on there own.  :)

Regards
John

Bonjour
Bonjour mon peu scumbag,
I may be daft, I may be stupid, but daft or stupid, I always manage to convince the boss that anything we (the family) like; comes from any country other than 'you know where' Champagne = Australia :) or if there is lotgs of French language on it, then it comes from Belgium  simple :) :)

Au revoir
John

id second a golf, polo or a well kept fiesta.

the other half drives a mk1 convertible, very solid little car.

i definately would NOT recommend a fiesta or KA under £1000... it will ending up costing more to keep on the road. They are fine when new, but not at that sort of age..

When I was 18, I got a C180 (W202). I still have the car amongst the others. Though at first I was a bit let down (I wanted something sportier) - in retrospect, it was an amazing choice by my dad.

The car has a road presence when you are young (its not every 18-yr old that can say he has a merc); its got "good" speeds (i.e. it will cruise at 80 on a motorway, but won't allow you to drag race at traffic lights) and is solidly built.

My vote goes for a C-class....

Michele

p.s. I was 6-foot flat when I got it...

I'm the same height and fit in a Ford KA with ease....as far as driving goes, they are the best small car to drive...great road handling, good suspension, comfortable, and cheap as chips to run and repair.

second that,, i had one for 4 years, great little car, i had no issues with it, i'm 6' 1" tall,,

Year 2000 seems to be a bit of watershed for improvements in small car safety ratings with a major increase in safety ratings according to NCAP. Renault Clio ,Toyota Yaris and Skoda Fabia ( you had to wait 2 more years to get that chassis platform as a VW polo !) come to mind. http://www.euroncap.com/supermini.aspx
what price safety of your nearest and dearest?
