car is reg in N Ireland

All it would mean is a car that goes to live in the rest of the UK which is older than 3 years and younger than 4 must have an MOT on arrival in the rest of the UK...simples.
I'm OK with mot side of things as car is only 2&1/2 year old. I have made little progress and it looks like i can put the cars current reg on retention by paying the £80 then When the retention cert arrives I have 2 options 1 try selling the Irish reg or requesting refund of the £80 (as it explains on the rear of the retention cert) and the reg goes back to DVLA.
MD5 I will try phoning DVLA again tomorrow, Thinking about it they might have been bit short staffed last week with this little snow storm.

I'm curious as to why you would want to put the current reg on retention. Is it any interesting plate or does it have commercial value?

No there is little value and I don't want it but If I put it on retention it costs me £80 which I can then reclaim back (as long as I do it within 10 years) by requesting a refund from Dvla so in effect cost is £0. I have also been told by DVLA there is no standard form to use to get a Uk plate so I would need to send a letter and documentation to DVLA requesting a UK Stile reg number which can take upto 4 weeks to hear back.

It strikes me that you are spending £80 to get £80 back?! Maybe the potential of making a profit on the sale of the NI plate is the attraction, but it seems a bit pointless and unnecessary otherwise. Mind you, it's none of my business, so forgive me, but if it saves you the hassle?

It would have put me off had I not been purchasing from main dealer.

You would be put off a car with a personalised plate? What will that hide exactly if you know? Nothing, because you can still check all the things as if it were the bog standard plate. Get in the real world please.

What's a UK stYle plate? Or did you mean a GB style plate?

Are you a UK born and bred native? If yes...learn where you live. If not, Google UK.
