My car (C270D) is now six years old and the plastic part of my car key is slowly breaking up. £225 is the cost of replacement, my dealer tells me. While I am about it I think I should replace my wife's key, also showing signs of cracking, and wonder whether the second key will cost a s much. I wonder whether the initial setting up to reproduce the key is where the cost is, and the second one might be a little "cheaper". Is that a forlorn hope? Hope to hear from someone.

I bought a secondhand key off e-bay for £8, it was in as new condition. Next step is to remove the internal components and replace them with your own. In effect you have just replaced the broken plastic part of your key.

Just ensure the key you buy is the same year & size as your own or the internal components will not fit.

I recently had a quote of £247 from my local MB dealer. not nice.

I did the same as rf065, but be careful taking the white clip out. Total cost £14 and works perfectly.
