Car not starting

Car not starting - AA man said the ignition key block was not sending signal. common intermittent fault on Merc. scared to take roof off now. or drive.
The Muti media worked, doors lock and close. roof was open at the time. could not operate to close. when i turned the key in the ignition and foot on clutch. nothing no sound. !st AA said could be control unit after checking battery which was fine. he banged the ignition block and it started when he turned key. Now scared to drive in care happens again or scared to take roof down. when it happened i had just filled up at petrol station roof down. good job it was not on the road or worse raining.
Is this common fault

Yep, cheapo servo motor inside eis failing. Get it repaired asap, there is lotsa more job if motor is stuck and wheel in lockecd position.
