Car makers have been keeping quiet about this for obvious reason. Long and short of it is new consumer laws have passed that make it far easier for buyers to get refunds, in the case of new cars if there is a mechanical fault within 3 months of ownership you have the right to reject the car, if it's longer than 3 months but within 6 months the dealer has one Chance to rectify or you have the right to reject.

I rejected a car that was 1yr old and the dealership were key to getting BMW to accept the rejection rather than fob me off.
