Bit of good news at weekend. Been looking at exchanging my car for a Honda CR-V. 2 months ago the P/X value (with 180k mls on clock) by a Honda Franchise against a new CRV was £2,500. On Sunday, i was at a car supermarket looking at yr 56 CRV (9,900) and the guy never even drew in breath through his teeth when i told him the mileage (very unusual) in stead, he said, "only just run in then". Any way, his value was £3,500, saying that second hand values have gone up. Good news eh?

Car Valuation

Well ED, i thought it was a result but, i went to my local Nissan franchise dealer yesterday to P/X my car against a 2005 XTrail at £9,000 and was offered only £2,500. I thought all salesmen used the Glasses guide? If so, why should there be a difference of £1,000, as both cars i was considering buying were of similar value. Does anyone on here know what the true value should be?

Many thanks,

When buying a used car your px value can vary dramatically depending on the price of the car your buying - If it's over priced to start with you will get a inflated px value which makes the customer feel like he's gettin a good deal.

If you post year model and spec can get a Glasses valuation but not sure it actually means anything anymore :dk:

Glass' Guide is literally that, just guide. The people who make Glass' don't actually write the cheques out to the seller do they, it's the people in the trade who set the values at whatever we can sell them onto Joe Public for.

Glass' is often well off the mark, take for example cars like Skoda Octavia vRS and Jaguar S-Type R unlikely cars to worth the money but they are miles ahead of the guide, whilst an Impreza is so far behind book it's unreal. I don't even bother using Glass now I just look on autotrader and see what I can actually sell cars for, Glass' is useful to find out what insuance group cars are though!

I sold my BMW last month, tried various places to advertise, but did not want to advertise privately as I felt that most people spending £20k on a car would want dealer facilities/backup.

Lowest offer was £14k, highest was £19k from a main dealer. The book appears to have been more or less thrown out the window it seems to me!

Glass's Guide is the best guide you'll get. Used as the bible by most dealers. And the values are based on what actual dealers are paying in the real world - not a formula.

Go the Vauxhall website and under Finance you will see 'Value my Car'. In there you will find a good version of Glass's Guide, free, which will give the part ex value of your car.

Or go to the Glass's Guide website, put in all details, and for £3 they will give you a detailed valuation including trade prices for cash, private sale prices, dealer prices etc.

Different dealers specialise in different cars so some are happier to buy a car than others and will pay more. Others less. Some won't want at all if they are overstocked. So prices vary. But I have always been able to get the Glass's price by going to a few dealers

It is true that prices have gradually gone up since the start of 2009. Seems to be something to do with a lack of used stock and more people buying used instead of new from what I heard

Glasses and CAP guides are usually the most accurate, the former can be accessed F.O.C. here - Glass's Consumer Values - 1/7
