Hi, i’m wondering if anyone can help
my car has been making a vibrating noise for the past maybe 4 weeks. i’ve had the car completely checked over and everything tightened up so as far as im aware nothing can be loose
i’ve also had the gearbox checked and engine and nothing seems to be up there.
it seems to be vibrating on the dash and sometimes vibrates on the passenger and driver side door aswell.
i hit something in the road a month or 2 back and think it might have started since then.
i even took a video because it’s driving me nuts but can’t upload it on here!
any ideas?!

Presumably the wheels and tyres have been checked for balance?

A buckled wheel can cause this even when it is appears to be balanced as can a tyre that may be slightly deformed.

it does it when the car is stood still aswell

as per stratman + gearbox mount?

Engine/gearbox mount, can't be anything drive related if it does it when stationary

Massage seats?
i wish my car had massage seats!

im going to get the alternator belt taken off to see if it’s out of balance all the engines been checked and my dad thinks my cars too new to have something wrong with the gearbox mount

I’ve never heard of this? :dk:

Is it a petrol or diesel? Are you sure it’s not mis-firing? Have you checked the engine and gearbox mounts?

If memory serves correctly this was the car that experienced a frontal collision a while back?
Alarm siren won’t stop going off!
Depending on the severity of impact maybe something else has come loose? Lots of plastic undertrays on modern cars which might come loose and flap about--they also make it very hard to inspect underneath for damage:(

I had a hideous rattling vibration at idle. It was the warning triangle in its plastic box behind the passenger seat. Moved it and noise vanished. It doesn't take much displacement or change in mounting to allow something to vibrate.

It’s not miss firing, it’s a diesel and they’ve all been checked, i’ve got the car in again this morning getting checked by my dad as it seems to be getting worse

Everything has been checked and tightened up it seems to be abit of a mystery at the minute :wallbash:

The easy way - swap the wheel over for a full sized spare and see if it goes away.

My s124 had a steering wheel judder that was the driver's side front wheel being slightly deformed. Tended to be more noticeable are moderate speeds and less at low or high speed.

How hard was the impact when you drove over something just before it started?

The advice on here seems sensible to me, either the engine or gearbox mounts.

it cracked my alloy but there didn’t seem to be any other damage

it does it when the cars in neutral ticking over so it can’t be to do with the wheels i don’t think

Correct.
There are two sources of engine vibration making its way into the cabin. One is a failed mount (engine or transmission) and can be hard to spot externally. The other is something attached to the engine making contact with something on the car. This can be something detached from either.
The only other source isn't direct but something vibrating in sympathy (probably not mounted as intended) eg, my warning triangle. Usually, it will only occur at certain (not all) engine rpm.
You just have to work through the list until the culprit is found.

edit PS.
There's an outside possibility of vibration being transmitted through the controls. Unlikely to be throttle as likely an electrical connection only, but clutch cable (if manual) and possibly gear linkage. But either should be felt through the pedal or lever.

It often takes a significant impact to buckle, let alone crack an alloy wheel.

As the driver you're largely protected from the impact which can often result in you thinking it wasn't as bad as it sounded.

An impact that can crack an alloy wheel will almost certainly be enough to damage an engine mount in the right circumstances. The difference being the damage to the alloy wheel being very visible, the damaged engine mount much less so.
